Tottenham Set to Lose Assistant Coach Matt Wells to MLS Side Colorado Rapids

MLS, Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is set to lose a member of his coaching staff as assistant coach Matt Wells is set to leave North London to become the head coach of MLS side Colorado Rapids.

In his early days as a player, Wells worked his way up through the youth ranks of Tottenham Hotspur, from the age of nine. Unfortunately, he never made a senior debut, with his career at the North London club severely hampered by injuries. As a result, he focused upon football coaching and successfully gained his UEFA B Licence at the age of just 20.

Wells was the assistant coach to Scott Parker during their days in charge of Tottenham’s development squad and under-18s. Wells later followed the now Burnley manager to Fulham, Bournemouth and Club Brugge after becoming the head coach of the Lilywhites’ youth squad following Parker’s departure.

In 2023, Wells returned to his hometown in North London as one of the assistant coaches of Tottenham under then manager Ange Postecoglu, becoming the senior assistant coach in 2024 before reverting to just an assistant earlier this year.

Following the appointment of current head coach Thomas Frank, the Enfield born coach retained his spot in the new era of the club having now announced his departure for a new opportunity in the MLS.

Wells is known for his exceptional guidance on ‘timing in football’, with him describing the timing of every pass and movement as a very crucial step in creative play. As a former midfielder himself, he allows his central creative players to have full allowance to be creative in their own desired way.

Born and bred in North London, Wells has been Tottenham through and through his entire life, as a long standing part of the club he was asked his thoughts on Tottenham reaching the Europa League Final in Bilbao, which the club later went on to win 1-0 against rivals Manchester United, thanks to the winning goal by Brennan Johnson.

“It’s exciting. You can feel it around the place, you can feel it with the boys. Us as coaches, as staff, we’re really excited. We’re proud of the Europa League campaign so far but we want to get the job done. It’s been busy, a lot of preparation going into the game as you’d expect, but we’re excited. I’m proud and privileged as a Tottenham boy to be in this position and definitely going to make the most of it.

“It’s a final so there’s more magnitude than the semi-finals but don’t forget they were big pressure games. The boys had to deliver in Bodo – not an easy place to go, you see their home record, well-documented the difficulties of the environment and the boys delivered. No different in Frankfurt with the record they have at home, I think they’d scored for 30 consecutive games, and we kept a clean sheet. So the boys have that behind them, they’re ready.”

Following Tottenham’s European triumph in Bilbao, the assistant coach is now set to leave his boyhood club, with news of his departure spreading across social media. Spurs fans have been quick to congratulate the long-time club servant on securing his first opportunity as a senior head coach.

@mnufcnews Great young coach. He’ll do well there I reckon.

@ToneTalksFooty2 MLS is turning into a developmental league for young managers.. I kinda like it

@DaddyShuttle Massive news! Excited to see the direction he has planned for the team

@NoToKYC Bro, watch this coach moonwalk his way to the top

@librarygreenie what the helly…he’s actually decent good luck to him

@RyderAshby WOW. I hope this really pans out.

@JosephDarb83861 He just became one of the key members of Frank’s coaching staff. Whose going to replace him.

@TalkTHFC__ MASSIVE LOSS.

@owenthfc__ Well that’s a shame. Confusing why he’s taking his first step in the MLS with all respect but wish him the best of luck, comes across as a great young coach

@THFC__Cam This guy won a trophy here at Spurs, what a guy hope you do well Matt

@StatessideFooty This is a great hire for the Rapids. MLS is an attacking heavy league, and the Rapids have a few talented attacking players. The question is can wells bring balance to Colorado?

@filmillers He’s better than this but must be desperate to get out & prove himself asap. Will have an incredible career having learned all he can under Thomas Frank. Didn’t take long, did it?

@robandlime If true that is great for the MLS but a loss for us .. wish him well if he does go

While reports pointing to an almost guaranteed move to the MLS, it did cause some controversy on the internet amongst fans since Colorado Rapids is a sister club to historically bitter rivals Arsenal through shared ownership by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.

@DeepSeaTitan  A Tottenham coach managing a club owned by the Kroenkes? This is sacrilege

The Rapids have their eyes set on their new desired head coach to head into the 2026 MLS season since current head coach Chris Armas’ contract runs out next month, the negotiations between him and the club have completely collapsed with little to no room for a possible extension, clearing the path for Wells’ arrival.
