Wayne Rooney Impresses Fans With Lean Look On BBC World Cup Duty

Wayne Rooney has added new chapter to his weight saga by appearing incredibly lean in the ongoing 2026 World Cup appearances for BBC.

While the quality of his analysis has been impressive, it was how Rooney looked that grabbed more attention.

A fresh clean shaven style and neat hairstyle only added to the lean look, marking a strong departure from his recent public engagements.

It is easily the most healthy Rooney has looked since his playing days.

In fact, even during his final stint at Derby County, Rooney’s physique had come under the scanner and ultimately culminated in him taking retirement mid-season in 2020/21.

Fans were quick to offer the iconic striker congratulations for embarking on the fitness journey.

One even mentioned that Rooney recently talked about eating healthier on Talksport.

Apparently, Wazza got back in shape for the recently concluded Soccer Aid and looks to have continued the same healthy diet.

Some others were more cynical and speculated the weight loss was a result of GLP-1 injections like Mounjaro or Retatrutide.

Nothing exists in the media to prove or disprove either of those claims.

However, it is safe to say that for a former elite athlete that spent years on the grind, finding the motivation to go through the painstaking process is an incredible effort on Rooney’s part.

Rooney’s past struggles with weight-related issues

In his 2012 memoir My Decade in the Premier League, Rooney described in detail his constant battle with weight gain.

“I’m like most blokes, I put on a few pounds after a holiday. Even if I don’t train for a week, I put on two or three,” he wrote.

“Honestly the night before we’d go in to get weighed, I’d sit in the [steam room] for 90 minutes. Fully clothed! I wouldn’t eat a thing, drink a thing, I’d be struggling to get in the building!” Rooney would add post-retirement.

In the book, Rooney even mentioned a specific incident from 2009 that highlighted just how acute his problems got at times.

“When I get back to Carrington for the first day of work, I’m in for a shock. The scales in the club gym tell me I’ve put on a few more pounds than expected — seven. Seven!”

“It’s not a problem though. It’s not as if the manager is leaning over my shoulder as the numbers come in, tutting and making jokes about me eating too many chip butties. Besides, I know I can shift it in a week or two… If I go abroad I like to get into the hotel gym three times a week to work on the treadmill and do some weight work,” Rooney continued.

“That way I can be sharp when we get back to training and the running will feel easier when the preseason games start. But coming back for preseason after a few [beverages] and a few weeks away from a ball is physically tough.”

However, the most revealing account of just how deeply the issue affected Rooney mentally arrived during an appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast in 2025.

“I’m actually very insecure about a number of things. I have been my whole career over my weight, over how I look. Even when I was in the best shape I was in as a football player, I wouldn’t take my top off,” Rooney confessed, leaving his former teammate in shock.

“You’re meant to be this macho guy who is going and playing football and being successful. But a lot of the time, you are vulnerable.”

Regardless of all else, Rooney can now afford to be much more confident in his physical self once again.
