Luis Suarez Kept Switching Shirts During Uruguay Match and Nobody Can Explain It
Two-time winners Uruguay have got their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign off to a rocky start.
Playing in the beach city of Miami, La Celeste has failed to impress a series of high-profile stars in attendance. Foremost amongst them has been the national as well as local legend, Luis Suarez.
Uruguay began their campaign by being held to a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia. On Sunday, their fortunes fell further when they could only eke out a solitary point against World Cup debutants Cape Verde.
The South Americans came back from an early deficit to lead 2-1 at half-time.
The going was good until a defensive mishap in the 61st minute saw Fernando Muslera abandon his goal and Helio Varela tucked into an empty net, securing a draw for his team.
Suarez was present in the VIP box watching the Uruguay contest on both occasions.
The country’s all-time leading goalscorer currently plays for Inter Miami and resides in the city itself along with his family.
Known to wear his heart on his sleeve, Suarez was at his animated best as he rode the highs and lows throughout the two games.
However, it was his outfits that made for a far more compelling story, and soon had the entire internet talking.
Tense Luis Suarez keeps switching clothes
Suarez had come to watch the Cape Verde game with his wife Sofia Balbi.
At the start of the game, both of them were donning the Uruguay Black Panther away jersey, even though the team was playing in their traditional sky blue kit.
Notably, the back of Suarez’s jersey sported the name of Nicolas de la Cruz. The midfielder plays for Brazilian club Flamengo and came off the bench in the 69th minute.

When Uruguay scored their first in the 44th minute, the cameras were quick to cut to Suarez in the box.
He was unsurprisingly elated and his face was plastered with a wide grin, still proudly wearing the Uruguay shirt.
However, when his team scored again six minutes later, Suarez had gone through a complete wardrobe change.
While his smile grew wider, the Uruguay jersey had given way to a white t-shirt and black leather jacket.

Some users online have speculated it was due to Suarez’s sponsorship agreement with Puma, considering the Uruguay jerseys have been made by Nike.
Even if true, the reasoning fails to justify Suarez’s next move.
The mystery compounded further when the cameras put him on the big screen again during the final throes of the game.
Suarez was back in his away national kit, the smile now replaced by a jittery and tense look as Uruguay pushed for a winner.

Maybe Suarez could just not bear the thought of not wearing his team colours.
Maybe he thought it was a good omen that would help Uruguay secure all three points. I guess we’ll never know.
Are Uruguay missing Suarez’s services
Uruguay are without Suarez in a FIFA World Cup for the first time in two decades.
The legendary striker had made his tournament debut in 2010 and powered them to a semi-final for the first time in 40 years.
However, he was absent for the encounter after famously picking up a red-card against Ghana for an intentional hand-ball.
Four years later, Suarez was embroiled in controversy again when he was suspended for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini.
Despite all the contentious moments, Suarez is by far their leading all-time goalscorer with 69 strikes in 143 appearances.
Suarez last represented the national team during a 0-0 draw against Paraguay in 2024. The legend announced his retirement thereafter due to a falling out with manager Marcelo Bielsa.
However, Suarez backtracked on his decision a few weeks before the World Cup, stating he would “never say no to the national team.”
But Bielsa had already moved on by then, leaving Suarez to watch the World Cup from the stands.
With Uruguay’s second highest goal-scorer Edinson Cavani also retiring after Qatar 2022, there are questions being raised on the quality of their strikeforce.
Notably, all three of their goals so far have come through wingers instead of a number nine.
Regardless, the country can be assured of Suarez’s support, be it on or off the field and irrespective of his choice of clothing.
