It has been a hectic time to juggle which players have had price rises and drops. With 12 transfers out and a sea of red arrows, FPL managers are in a state of chaos. The transfer market has never been more volatile. The newer casual players are point chasing, this happens every season.
The Herd Mentality: Last week Ballard a £4.5m defender for Sunderland rose in price to £4.6m after a 17 pointer and what happened, this week he was subbed for an injury and got 1 point. Elaborating that last week points are not going to be this weeks points. We see a player get a massive haul and managers immediately rush to bring them in, often at the cost of a previously reliable team member. This pursuit of the differential player, the one who will catapult us up the ranks, often leads to a cycle of chasing points and falling victim to the fear of missing out. This panic-buying and panic-selling is a stock market frenzy in miniature, where every manager is chasing the next big rise in value.
Planning goes out of the window so early, managers research their team and come up with a plan of who they want to sub in or transfer out this week. Palmer’s withdrawal and now Saka’s hamstring injuries cause unpredictability and panic.
The Wildcard and Chip Addiction: The introduction of two sets of chips this season has encouraged managers to play a more aggressive and less conservative game especially the more Casual player who is likely to not play the entire season. The Wildcard, in particular, is a ‘get out of jail free’ card that allows managers to completely rebuild their team. Knowing this option is available can make managers more reckless with their free transfers in the early gameweeks.
This constant churn of transfers has a significant cost. The price of panic is a loss of team value and a cycle of chasing points that often ends in disappointment. Managers become so focused on fixing one problem that they create three more. Keeping faith in your team is key. In a season where chaos reigns supreme, perhaps the true path to a green arrow is not through a flurry of red arrows on the transfer screen, but through a steady hand and a calm mind.
