The Iconic 2009 Steven Gerrard Photo Reimagined With Szoboszlai And It Slaps

Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool, Steven Gerrard

Ahh, Dominik Szoboszlai is really the name on every Liverpool fan’s lips right now. After his scintillating 83rd minute free kick against Arsenal helped the defending champions climb to the top of the Premier League table, the overjoyed Scousers serenaded him at Anfield.

His free kick, which was also the only goal scored in a dogged fight between the table toppers at Anfield, was another moment of individual brilliance which has become a staple of the Hungarian midfielder’s time at Liverpool. The free kick was even praised by Arsenal goalie David Raya, who appeared quite taken aback by the flight and trajectory of the ball when it hit the top corner.

“I haven’t seen it back yet. Disappointed not to save it like every goal you concede. I think it’s a hell of a strike. I remember the ball moving a lot and moving away from me. Hopefully, the next one I can save.” “It’s a very good strike especially with the new balls and everything. We still have to adapt. It’s going away from me so it’s harder to gauge and save it.”

Twitter was abuzz with the 24-year old Szobozlai, donning a headband in a new hairstyle fairly reminiscent of Mesut Ozil or Luka Modric, with praises sung for his contribution to Arne Slot’s team.

Wearing the same no.8 that club legend Steven Gerrard wore, Szoboszlai singlehandedly rescued 3 points from a game where neither side found it easy to go over the line.

Liverpool fans from around the world are now comparing the midfield stalwart to their former club captain, with fans in Twitter rallying behind an incredible edit of the Hungarian midfielder, uploaded by an user named @TheAdhamSameh

The original picture, as uploaded by user @MB_Graphics11 in the same thread, shows Steven Gerrard, the then club captain of Liverpool, being mobbed by fans.

The photo, captured at the end of a match against Hull City in 2009, is an iconic remembrance of Gerrard’s legacy in a “nearly-there” Liverpool side that strived to achieve success in a league dominated by Alex Ferguson’s legendary Manchester United, Arsene Wenger’s mercurial Arsenal and Jose Mourinho’s impactful Chelsea.

Gerrard’s loyalty and passion for his club have never come into question, as it is quite a well-known fact that nearly every big club in Europe, from the Real Madrids to the Chelseas, wanted him at any cost. Gerrard, the humble Anfield hero that he always was, would always stay put at Liverpool, never entertaining proposals.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s career is a long shot away from Gerrard’s, but every fan knows that he surely has the potential to walk that mile. Having already become the captain of Hungary at the age of 23, Szoboszlai has shown immense vigour and passion as a midfield general, with his box-to-box runs, crisp short passes and attacking flair making him one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

A stand-out performer, Szoboszlai is now slowly coming into the role of a major leader in a dressing room dominated by world-class leaders in the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Mohammad Salah.

It remains to be seen if he fulfills the major expectations that come with wearing Gerrard’s jersey and filling the position of a man whose name is synonymous with the club, but there is no doubt that Liverpool fans believe in him.

The edit by @TheAdhamSameh, might be a neat display of Photoshop skill, but carries forward an important message for the Hungarian midfielder.

Dominik Szoboszlai is going to dominate headlines, and, if the momentous Gerrard photograph is anything to go by, the former will surely “never walk alone” in his journey to become Liverpool’s midfield mainstay for years to come.
