For years though, Haaland’s public character has been a matter of both admiration and amusement. His interviews are famously brief and direct, his celebrations crisp and minimalistic. Fans and critics sometimes describe him as “laser-focused” or even “alien,” attributes that add to his mystery. However, this same peculiarity has given rise to an online subculture of memes — many of which, controversially, draw analogies to autism or neurodivergent features.
At the same time, the jokes about him being “mentally disabled” or “autistic” stem from his facial features. Some online memes suggested that his seemingly mechanical behaviour, his focus, his calmness under pressure, meant he must be on the autism spectrum or have a mental disability.
These memes, while sometimes intended ironically, walk a delicate line between playful banter and insensitivity. They generally employ exaggerated facial expressions or isolated video clips to portray Haaland as socially uncomfortable or distant – an unjust reduction of an athlete whose focus and professionalism are the characteristics of high success.
Haaland himself appears to have seen some of this awareness. He’s reportedly responded to a meme in which he was being referred to for his unusual autistic like behaviour— effectively owning the joke.
On Instagram and X (previously Twitter), user ThatGuysJokes (TGJ) posted a reel and a tweet respectively, highlighting about Haaland and Arsenal wherein, Haaland was, in a subtle funny way, targeted for his autistic like behaviour/personality.
Haaland, being a good sport that he is, took no offence to it and engaged all his followers and fans with his witty reply – ‘comeon don’t do me like that’. The post and the comment are real and you can check it here:

Ultimately, Haaland’s handling of the incident shows a bigger truth: athletes today reside in a 24/7 social media spotlight, where perception may flip with a single post. Yet, the way Haaland turned what could’ve been an embarrassing narrative into a moment of humour and relatability shows not only emotional intelligence but also a growing comfort with his worldwide image.
