Under Mikel Arteta’s leadership in recent years, Arsenal have developed into an absolute defence-first team. While they have stellar forwards like Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz, the club has largely focused on locking up defenders to win their games. Behind players like William Saliba and Riccardo Calafiori, the Gunners have assembled a formidable cast to support their defensive strategies as well.
But in recent weeks, injuries have acted as a spoiler to the franchise’s system. Their Rolls-Royce defender, Saliba, has been out ever since this season’s tip-off due to a back injury. Meanwhile, Piero Hincapie is out with an ankle injury. These untimely injuries have narrowed down the team’s depth, and the club is reportedly looking to solve these issues with new signings.
According to The Daily Briefing journalist Mark Brus, the North London club is eyeing a move for Bayern Munich’s 34M-pound defender Kim Min-Jae. Ever since his time at Napoli, Min-Jae has established himself as a reliable player in the CB position. Owing to his height and strength, Min-Jae presents a dominating presence at the back line, with his skill set largely involving handling 1v1 situations and winning aerial possession.
Owing to these strengths, Bayern Munich also shows a lot of trust in him. For instance, in the 2026-27 season, Min-Jae has already played 566 minutes in 7 games for the German club, as per Transfermarkt. Landing such a defender at the Emirates in this current situation would be a major silver lining for the Gunners.
His partnership with Saliba, when he eventually comes back to the squad, can be great for the team’s depth. The 29-year-old will also fit quite well in Arteta’s system that employs a compact 4-4-2 defensive block and a high defensive line with inverted full-backs. While the Gunners have players like Gabriel Magalhaes to pair up with William Saliba, Min-Jae’s experience of playing in various leagues like Serie A and the Bundesliga can be a massive boost for Arsenal’s defensive lineup.
Besides Arsenal, several other clubs like AC Milan, Tottenham, and Aston Villa are interested in the defender. The issue with this signing is that there haven’t been any reports of Min-jae looking to move out of Germany. If the Gunners can actually spend the big bucks, they might have a major acquisition for their defence, especially if Min-Jae actually wants to try a new challenge in the Premier League.
As per the reports from Football 365, Arsenal will surely watch over Min-Jae’s situation ahead of the winter transfer window. For now, there haven’t been any official talks, but the football community can expect some fireworks in that transfer channel in January.
