Mikel Arteta’s Nightmare? David Raya Hints at Arsenal Departure

Arsenal, David Raya

David Raya’s journey with Arsenal has been one for the football storybooks. After joining the club on a loan deal from Brentford, Raya has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. Replacing Aaron Ramsdale in the team, Raya fought his way through the hierarchy and is now standing as a pivotal part of the team’s defense. However, that journey can seem to face an unwanted conclusion after Raya’s latest admission.

In a recent conversation, the 31-year-old expressed his desire to move to Spain and play in La Liga. “I’d like to experience La Liga,” Raya said, as per The Athletic via The New York Times. “I’m happy at Arsenal right now, but I want to play in Spain in the future.”

Raya’s admission isn’t surprising. There are many teams that would be in the market for a player of his calibre. Being a Spanish native, a return to would also be kind of a homecoming for him.

With his contract expiring in 2028, losing David Raya at this important stage of Mikel Arteta’s project would be disastrous for them.

With Raya between the sticks, the Gunners ended their Premier League season last season with a staggering 19 clean sheets. The 31-year-old has also won three Premier League Golden Gloves for three consecutive seasons. Even this season, Raya has recorded 7 clean sheets in 10 games for his club, including two clean sheets in the Champions League.

His distribution, sharp reflexes, and aerial strength aren’t found in the goalkeeping market every day. As the first attacker, Raya has grown impressively as a sweeper-keeper.

Thus, replacing Raya won’t be easy at all for the north London club. However, they reportedly have their eyes on a 26-year-old youngster from Serie A, who has already shown bright promise. According to reports from Football365, the Gunners are immensely interested in Atalanta BC goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.

Carnesecchi has been a brilliant shot-stopper for the Serie A club and has bagged 17 clean sheets last season for the team. The issue with the signing is that Carnesecchi’s contract runs until 2028, which leaves less room for the Gunners to make an affordable deal. Meanwhile, other clubs like PSG are also keeping a close eye on Carnesecchi, as per Transfer Feed.

As a result, Arsenal’s equation with the player is poised to get even more complicated. However, the Gunners would have no option but to make a big offer for Carnesecchi if Raya eventually decides to leave the north London club. But even if Raya doesn’t leave, the Gunners should make a bid for the Atalanta keeper, considering his tactical fit in Arteta’s compact defensive system because of his shot-stopping and 6’5 wingspan.

For now, Raya continues to guard the Arsenal sticks, but with the winter transfer window coming in a few months and the summer transfer window next year, the equation around the club’s goalkeeping spectrum can see a massive change with these recent updates.
