“Step Up NOW!” Liverpool Hold Emergency Summit Over Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott, Liverpool

Liverpool and Valencia have asked Harvey Elliott to step up amid his difficult start to life in La Liga. Representatives from both clubs recently met with the English winger to discuss his loan spell at Blanquinegros.

The 23-year-old is yet to feature in the starting eleven this season, earning just 152 minutes in his six La Liga appearances as a substitute. The former Fulham youngster is one of the highest earners at Valencia, but is yet to contribute with a goal or an assist.

According to a Spanish reporter, Nacho Sanchis, Valencia sporting director Braulio Vazquez and Liverpool’s head of international relations and scouting, Kiko Espinar, met Elliott on October 22 to discuss his loan status.

Liverpool want the player to play regular football as they are concerned about his development. Valencia are looking more from one of their top earners before handing him a starting eleven role.

According to Sanchis, both clubs have asked Harvey Elliott to ‘step up’ and be more challenging on the ball. Valencia also want the player to ‘run more’ and ‘be pragmatic with the ball’. The Liverpool youngster has been ‘very open’ to the suggestions and is likely to be closely monitored in upcoming games.

Liverpool may have concerns after Elliott’s previous loan spell at Aston Villa. The player started just one Premier League game under Unai Emery, who later admitted to financial complications in a loan deal.

After earning the Euro-21 2025 Player of the Tournament award, the player was loaned out to Aston Villa to further his development with regular Premier League game time. However, the Reds added a mandatory buy clause (£30 million) in this loan deal, which was supposed to trigger after 10 league appearances.

The clause has been cited as a factor behind his playing time, as Emery limited the player’s appearances to avoid financial obligations. Learning from their mistake, the English giants have not included any transfer clause in Elliott’s loan deal with Valencia. So, it’s up to the player to turn things around with his limited opportunities.

However, since being challenged to step up, Harvey Elliott’s situation has gone from bad to worse as he earned a red card in Valencia’s recent La Liga game against Villarreal at home on Saturday. Coming off the bench with a 1-1 score at Mestalla, he was forced off after receiving two yellow cards in the 89th minute. The Visitors found an extra-time winner as ten-man Valencia suffered their sixth defeat of the season.

With just one win in their opening ten games this season, Valencia currently sit 19th in the La Liga standings.
