We might have a deserving winner for goal of the weekend in the footballing world as Irvin Cardona scored an acrobatic volley with incredible technique to win the game for Brest against Dijon in the French Ligue 1 today.
In stoppage time after the end of the second half, Cardona met a cross from the left side from teammate Romain Perraud with a stunner of a strike from his right foot, to hammer the ball straight into the top right corner, past the goalkeeper.
The 21-year-old’s technique to strike the ball was almost impeccable as he gave Dijon’s Alfred Gomis in goal no chance to save the shot, securing three points for his team in the process.
The match ended as a 2-0 away victory for Brest at the Stade Gaston Gérard, thanks to successful strikes from the substitute Cardona and Perraud who struck earlier in the match, and turned provider for the second goal.
The French attacker’s innate technique makes his effort as an early contender for the Ligue 1 goal of the season, as he timed his volley perfectly right to score a goal which, even the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be proud of.
A goal of the calibre of Cardona’s strike is always deemed to be something to look back at, no matter what the final result might be. But the away victory being Brest’s first league win, opening their account for the season, leaves an even sweeter aftertaste.
There is no better way to seal the three points of the season in the bag than scoring an absolutely world-class strike to be stored in the archives for a long time to come, without a shadow of a doubt.
