Liverpool might’ve suffered a 3-2 loss to PSV Eindhoven to end the league phase of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, but that didn’t stop their fans from having an absolute blast. The game was not really that important for Arne Slot’s side as they had directly booked a place in the Round of 16.
With the majority of the starting XI regulars (including Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson) omitted from the squad, the Reds basically played a second-string side. Despite their shakiness on the pitch, the Liverpool travelling supporters had a party in Eindhoven – be it in the stands of the Philips Stadion or in public places.
At least a few thousand Liverpool supporters travelled to watch their team in action in the Netherlands and they maintained an upbeat attitude throughout the game. Even when their team started losing, they did not stop an irresistible chant from going on.
Especially in the last 10 minutes, when it looked like the Reds were destined to lose, their energetic supporters continued belting out a quality chant. Because of the noisy atmosphere in the stadium, only scrappy bits of the lyrics were clearly heard, and many watching on TV thinking exactly what they were chanting about.
Well, it turns out that the Liverpool supporters were belting out the popular song ‘A Liverbird Upon My Chest’ by the rock band The Ragamuffins. This band, which was formed in 2008 by Liverpool fanatics, is an rock/indie pop band that specializes in creating songs for Liverpool players.
This particular song was released by them in 2012 as part of their album ‘Unity is Strength’. The song’s chorus goes something like this:
A Liverbird upon my chest (Upon my chest)
We are the men, of Shankly’s best (Of Shankly’s best)
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the Championship in May
The entire song is almost seven-and-a-half minutes long and makes references to Liverpool’s successes in the past. It makes references to Liverpool winning the European Treble (league, league cup and European Cup) in 1984 – defeating AS Roma in Rome. It also boasts about how they won the 1987/88 league title under Kenny Dalglish’s managerial efforts.
There are also various digs at Everton throughout the song, with one early on going like
Now if you go down Goodison Way
Hard luck stories you hear each day
There’s not a trophy to be seen
‘Cos Liverpool have swept them clean (with Mr Sheen)
The ‘Mr Sheen’ bit here is a multi-surface cleaner that is used to keep things like trophies shiny and clean. This chant has been a hit among fans who are regulars at Liverpool games, but the PSV Eindhoven trip was one of the rare occasions it was so prominently heard in a non-stop way.
Liverpool fans even sang this song while travelling on the tube after the loss to PSV, with th defeat not at all dampening their spirits. The Ragamuffins remain a fan-favorite among Liverpool supporters and even though ‘A Liverbird Upon My Chest’ only has just over 2,100 views on YouTube, the band are pretty popular on Spotify.
The Ragamuffins has over 33,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Their song ‘Si Senor’, a tribute to former striker Roberto Firmino, was often heard being sung by Liverpool fans when the Brazilian was still at Anfield. ‘Si Senor’ has over 400,000 streams on Spotify, the highest for any song.
The band also has popular songs for the likes of Arne Slot, Diogo Jota and Alexis Mac Allister – with ‘Oh Mac Allister’ being their latest release. With Liverpool being six points clear at the top of the Premier League table (with a game in hand), it’s safe to presume they’ll lift the league title in May and that’s why previewing the excitement with this groovy chant is not at all farfetched.
