The Case for Holding Joao Pedro in FPL Despite Back-to-Back Blanks

Fantasy Premier League

The most owned player in FPL is currently under hot discussion, having blanked in his last two matches. He is currently the second most sold player this week after Salah with more than 500,000 transfers out. This could potentially cause a price drop and you could lose team value. So is he a keeper or should we move on let us breakdown the major talking points.

João Pedro has returned zero shots in his last two matches, resulting in back to back blanks. The context here is crucial, Chelsea had a player sent off in both defeats, significantly hampering their attacking play. Their shots per 90 dropped from 15.0 to 9.0, and big chances per 90 plummeted from 3.5 to 1.5 during this period. While the blanks are concerning, the mitigating circumstances suggest the problem lies more with Chelsea’s disruption than Pedro’s individual performance.

The need to accommodate Erling Haaland (£14.4m), and the rise of other mid-priced forwards like Viktor Gyökeres (£9.0m), presents a strong opportunity cost. If you need funds elsewhere or want to jump on a player with a better immediate outlook, Pedro becomes the logical casualty.

After a challenging Gameweek 7 fixture against Liverpool, Chelsea embarks on one of the best fixture runs in the league starting from Gameweek 9. Over an eight match stretch (GW9-16), five of their games score only 2 on the Fixture Difficulty Rating (FDR), including matches against Sunderland (H), Wolves (H), Burnley (A), Leeds (A), and Everton (H).

Pedro is suspended for Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League match between Gameweeks 8 and 9 and is not in the Brazil squad for the international break. While not a direct FPL benefit, this forced rest is likely to boost his minutes in the Premier League, ensuring he is fresh for the kind fixture run.

Cole Palmer is also expected back after the international break. His return will help boost Chelsea’s overall attack, which can only be good for Pedro’s point scoring potential in the long term.

There is no reason to sell Pedro apart from the upcoming fixture, which he may even score in given how vulnerable Liverpool are in defence. We have an international break after this match and it wise to save your transfer to combat any injuries that may occur during this period. He is an easy hold if you have him.
