Liverpool’s Goalie Crisis: Alisson & Mamardashvili Heading For Exits?

Alisson Becker, Liverpool

Alisson Becker has enjoyed a trophy-laden success at Liverpool in his eight-year spell, but is struggling with recurring hamstring injuries and a form since the start of the 2025-26 season. The Liverpool goalkeeper has started in all eight Premier League and three Champions League matches this season, overcoming his fitness issues, but his performances are not producing positive results for the club.

The 83-cap international has managed to keep only three clean sheets, conceding 15 goals this season. With his contract running until 2027, reports in Brazil have linked Alisson with a possible return to his homeland. The veteran’s contract with the Reds expires at the end of the 206-27season and the player is yet to negotiate a new deal with the English giants.

According to 1NewsBrasil, Flamengo are interested in signing the 34-year-old if he decides to return to Brazilian football next year. The report adds that the Brazilian giants intend to sign Alisson on a free transfer, but there is no official offer made yet.

In March, Liverpool triggered a one-year contract extension to keep Alisson at Anfield until the end of the 2026-27 season. However, there is no official report of the club discussing a new deal with their No. 1.

Alisson kicked off his professional career at Internacional, before entering the European scene with Roma in 2016 and Liverpool in 2018. Alisson has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and Carabao Cup twice while appearing in 343 overall matches with the Merseyside giants.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is reportedly looking for an Anfield exit in search of regular playing time. Since arriving from Valencia in August 2025, the Georgian’s appearances at Liverpool are limited to Cup matches. He featured in 10 Premier League matches while Alisson was injured last season but did not establish himself as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Report suggests Liverpool could consider Mamardashvili’s future if Alisson signs a new contract and remains at the club beyond 2027.

Keeping one eye on the future, Andoni Iraola’s side secured the signing of 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Genk in the last transfer window. Liverpool spent a whopping £30m to secure a six-year contract for the Belgian youngster on deadline day and sent him back on loan to Genk.

However, Brughmans is one for the future, and it will be too early for Liverpool to replace the club legend with unproven young talent next season.
