Liverpool Target €30M Ex-Man City Academy Star To Solve Midfield Dilemma

Liverpool

While Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is making the best of the players available to him right now, the central midfield position still needs fixing. With Alexis Mac Allister facing an uncertain future at Anfield, manager Andoni Iraola needs to identify a replacement for the Argentine. If recent reports are to be believed, then the 44-year-old Spanish manager may have found the man he is looking for.

According to an exclusive report by Team Talk, Liverpool are pushing to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha. Liverpool believe Nmecha is a more affordable option than AFC Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, who has also been linked with the club. At 26, Nmecha has been an important part of Dortmund’s midfield since 2023.

However, years before playing in Germany, Nmecha played the beautiful game in England. A product of Manchester City’s youth academy, Nmecha played three seasons for the defending Premier League champions. However, Nmecha could not make an impact, playing only three games for City’s senior team. He was released at the end of his contract in 2021.

After leaving Manchester City, Felix Nmecha joined VfL Wolfsburg. Nmecha made a name for himself at the German club, playing 50 games over two seasons across the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, and DFB-Pokal. Nmecha’s performances for Wolfsburg led Borussia Dortmund to sign him for €30 million.

While injuries marred the early part of Nmecha’s career at Dortmund, he regrouped and became one of Dortmund’s most important players. Nmecha is indispensable to head coach Niko Kovac’s system, and his performances have attracted interest from big European clubs.

One of the key traits of Felix Nmecha’s gameplay is his physicality. Standing at 6’3, Nmecha uses his long frame, strength, and balance to shield the ball under pressure and win crucial duels. Furthermore, he has good pace, which enables him to drive past opponents and break lines from deep midfield.

Nmecha is also a manager’s dream due to the versitality he offers in midfield. The German is comfortable playing the role of a box-to-box number eight or a deeper-lying midfielder. Apart from these traits, Nmecha is a good passer of the ball and has a high defensive work rate.

Nmecha’s familiarity with English football and overall gameplay make him an ideal signing for Liverpool. However, signing him won’t be easy as other Premier League teams are interested in securing the player’s signature.

Along with Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Roma are teams reportedly interested in Felix Nmecha. According to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Roma rate Nmecha highly:

“AS Roma rate him very highly, and AS Roma are trying to sign an attacking player in January. It depends on what he himself wants to do. Whether he wants to move in January or would prefer the summer to begin a new era.”

If Liverpool fails to sign Nmecha and Alex Scott seems like an expensive option, then the Merseyside club has another midfielder on their radar. Sky Germany reported that Liverpool have also short-listed AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara, who many clubs rate highly. With these options available at Liverpool’s disposal, it will be interesting to see who becomes manager Andoni Iraola’s main man in the center of the midfield.
