FPL GW 5 Guide: When to Wildcard, Who to Captain, Who to Buy & Challenge Picks

Fantasy Premier League

With the international break behind us and the FPL deadline fast approaching, it’s time to fine-tune your squads and secure your captaincy for another crucial weekend of Premier League action. The first few weeks of the season have delivered plenty of surprises and a few standout performers who are dominating our transfer plans.

From the must have players everyone is flocking to, to the tricky captaincy debate between the FPL giants, and a new FPL Challenge that’s set to test your skills, we’ve got you covered.

FPL Wildcard Guide: Should You Pull the Trigger in GW5 or Hold Until GW6?

The first wildcard of the Fantasy Premier League season is a precious commodity, and timing its use can be the difference between a mid table finish and a mini league victory. As Gameweek 5 approaches, many managers are staring at their squad and asking the same question: Is now the time, or should I wait one more week?

This article breaks down the pros and cons of using your wildcard in Gameweek 5 versus holding firm for Gameweek 6, providing the clarity you need to make this crucial decision.

The Case for Wildcarding in Gameweek 5

Pro: The “Fix My Team Now” Argument

For some managers, the season has started with a whimper, not a bang. Your team might be full of underperforming players, sidelined assets, and for those including me still on a double Aston Villa attack. Fun fact, Aston Villa are the only team in the England’s top 7 divisions to have not scored a league goal so far. If your squad requires more than three or four transfers to become competitive, a GW5 wildcard is a valid move to stop the bleeding and avoid a series of costly point hits.

Player prices can be volatile early in the season. By wildcarding in GW5, you can get in on the ground floor for assets that are about to see a significant price increase. This can give you a crucial £0.1m or £0.2m edge on your rivals in the long run. As people will Wildcard in GW 6 and there will be lots of price changes, if you are a little late to using the chip, you can miss out on players.

The biggest reason is the Triple Captaincy Chip on Erling Haaland for Burnley at home.

If you were to wildcard in Gameweek 6 you cannot use the Triple Captaincy chip as two chips cannot be used in one gameweek so you could miss out on a huge haul should Haaland smash in a few goals.

The Case for Holding until GW6 (The Popular Choice)

For most managers, the overwhelming consensus is to wait for Gameweek 6. The reasons are both strategic and data-driven, making it the safer and more appealing option for long term success.

Con: The GW5 Fixture Headache

The biggest argument against a GW5 wildcard is the schedule. It’s filled with unpredictable and potentially low scoring clashes between top teams. The reason many people are targeting the wildcard is for the Arsenal and Man City fixture swing after their match on Sunday.

Man City vs. Arsenal: This is the marquee matchup. While Erling Haaland is an essential asset, his returns against a defensively sound Arsenal could be minimal. Likewise, investing heavily in Arsenal’s attack just before they face the champions is a risky play. A GW6 wildcard allows you to get Haaland for his subsequent favorable fixture run without the immediate risk.

The Merseyside Derby: Liverpool vs. Everton is a fierce rivalry. While Mohamed Salah is a prime captaincy candidate, derby matches can be tight and unpredictable, making a big haul far from a certainty.

Many top players went without Arsenal assets and Haaland during the start of the season and want to use this early wildcard to bring in players like Gabriel, Gyokeres, Haaland, Calafiori, Eze, Foden etc.

For the vast majority of FPL managers, waiting for a Gameweek 6 wildcard is the optimal strategy. While a GW5 wildcard might feel tempting if your team is a mess, the potential for a low scoring week from key assets like Haaland makes it a risk. There is the payoff with the Triple captaincy choice, i myself am 50-50 on whether to Wildcard as i don’t own Haaland. However given i mostly follow the herd i will end up Wildcarding in GW 6.

FPL Gameweek 5: Best Captaincy Picks

The captain’s armband decision can make or break your Fantasy Premier League Gameweek. With double points at stake, choosing the right captain requires careful analysis of form, fixtures, and underlying statistics. This is one of the toughest Gameweeks to pick a captain as Manchester City play Arsenal at the Emirates, Liverpool host Everton at Anfield for the Merseyside Derby and Chelsea travel to Old Trafford. Here are the standout captaincy options for Gameweek 5, ranked by their potential to deliver maximum returns.

Mohammed Salah – Everton(H)

Mohamed Salah remains a dominant force, and his upcoming fixture is the Merseyside derby at Anfield. While Liverpool’s attack hasn’t been firing on all cylinders in the early stages of the season, they are still joint top for goals scored. The FPL king has somehow managed to return in games despite looking off it this season, all of his returns have come in injury time with the latest being a 95th min penalty against Burnley.

Salah has a formidable record against Everton, with eight goals and two assists in 13 meetings. His penalty duties and consistently high underlying stats make him a reliable choice. However, the derby can be a cagey affair, and Everton’s defense, despite some shaky underlying numbers, has been relatively stingy, conceding only three goals so far this season. He is projected to earn 6.8 points this gameweek.

Cole Palmer – Manchester United (A)

Cole Palmer has been Chelsea’s talisman and is a tempting captaincy option. He has been a consistent fantasy asset. He had a brilliant performance mid week against Bayern scoring a brilliant goal using his first touch and was denied another due to a marginal offside. When Cole Palmer stepped back onto the field in Gameweek 4, you could see the difference in the Blues’ attack.

This week, he’ll be up against a fragile Manchester United defense that’s been in disarray, conceding five goals in their last two league games. The team’s struggles were laid bare when they were thrashed 3-0 by rivals Manchester City last weekend, and with rumors of a managerial change circulating, their vulnerability is at an all time high. Palmer’s influence on the Chelsea attack is undeniable, and his potential against a vulnerable backline makes him a strong choice, particularly for those looking to move away from the two main options.

Jean Philippe Mateta – West Ham United(A)

Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace emerges as a strong differential captaincy candidate for Gameweek 5. He is a forward with a favorable fixture against a West Ham side that has conceded the most goals in the league (11) and a league high 12 big chances so far this season. Mateta is a key part of the Crystal Palace attack, leading his team with eight shots and six shots in the box. Crystal Palace has a stronger resolve when playing on the road than at Selhurst Park, as they have scored more goals on their away days. Mateta is on penalty duties for Palace and represents excellent differential value.

FPL Transfer Trends: Haaland, Van de Ven and Semenyo Dominate Ahead of Gameweek 5

The Fantasy Premier League landscape has shifted once again as managers make their moves ahead of Gameweek 5. A trio of attacking talents is dominating the transfer charts, with AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo (£7.5m) leading the charge after a phenomenal start to the season. He is closely followed by the evergreen Erling Haaland (£14.2m), Spurs CB Van de Ven (£4.7m) after his 14 pointer last week and Chelsea’s returning star, Cole Palmer (£10.4m).

Semenyo

Antoine Semenyo has become this gameweek’s hottest commodity, with over 750,000 FPL managers rushing to bring him into their squads. His electric start to the season has seen him rack up impressive hauls of 15 and 13 points, placing him just one point behind the overall leader, Haaland.

Semenyo’s underlying statistics tell the story of his incredible goal threat. He ranks second only to Haaland for shots in the box (11) and big chances (6), making him a truly explosive and budget friendly midfield option.

With a home fixture against a Newcastle side that has already conceded 17 shots in the box, the Ghanaian is poised to continue his rich vein of form. He is averaging 9.0 points per match and has a great fixture run. He is also on penalties in the absence of Kluivert, one of the best midfielders to own, his price has risen by £0.5m so far.

Haaland

Despite a challenging fixture against a resolute Arsenal defense, Erling Haaland remains a top transfer target. With ownership climbing and his price rising, managers who don’t already own the Norwegian goal machine are getting him in before his value becomes unmanageable. Haaland’s numbers are, as always, elite. He has an astonishing 18 shots in the box and has been involved in 11 big chances this season, both league leading figures. While Arsenal’s defense has been stellar, conceding just one goal and zero big chances, many FPL managers see the transfer as a long term play, ensuring they are not left behind for City’s more favorable fixtures on the horizon. Many managers are also on a wildcard looking to transfer him in and then play their triple captaincy chip on Haaland for Burnley at home for the next Gameweek.

Van de Ven

Spurs’ new defensive rock, Micky van de Ven, is the second most transferred in player, with over 350,000 managers making the switch. At just £4.7m, the Dutch international offers incredible value, combining defensive stability with attacking potential. He has already helped Spurs to three clean sheets and even chipped in with a goal, racking up 27 points. Van de Ven’s high ownership is a reflection of his consistent performances and the promising run of fixtures for Tottenham, which includes an upcoming match against a Brighton side that has struggled defensively this season. Spurs also have Wolves and Leeds in their next two matches after Brighton, he is a set and forget defender at that price. Thomas Frank has stepped up and really improved Spurs’ defensive vulnerabilities under Ange.

Palmer

Cole Palmer has wasted no time in re-establishing himself as a must have FPL asset. The Chelsea star, back from a brief injury, has found the net on his return against Brentford. He looked brilliant against Bayern in the UCL as well. Manchester United’s defense has been struggling, conceding seven goals in their first four games. For Palmer, this is a prime opportunity to build on his strong start and exploit a leaky backline. Beyond this weekend, Chelsea’s fixtures look very appealing, making Palmer a strong long term investment. He is on penalties and the best route to points for the Chelsea attack, he is also a great captaincy pick this week.

FPL Challenge: Double Points in the Merseyside Derby! (GW5)

This week the theme is Red vs Blue. Double Points awarded for players from Liverpool and Everton. They are 6 available players to choose from, you get 3 players per club and have an unlimited budget.

Before we start, here is how my team fared last week in the Classic Rivalry theme.

As you can see it was an amazing gameweek for me, racking up 103 points and getting a global rank of 796.

Vicario came in clutch against West Ham racking up 8 points thanks to 4 saves a clean sheet and 1 bonus. He was the second highest scoring keeper this gameweek after Roefs(10 Points).

Guehi as well a solid pick gave me 6 points a clean sheet against Sunderland. I was planning on going for Van de Ven who got a 14 pointer however i had picked Vicario so i decided to hedge my bets on multiple teams rather than banking on Spurs defence. I could have also gone for a City defender for the bonus however i was expecting Manchester United to come away with at least a goal.

That thinking made me land at Bruno who had an abysmal performance racking up just 0.02xG. The deeper role in midfield alongside Ugarte has really made him a bad option. On the brighter side Mo Salah yet again came up with a return in the dying minutes after a horrible mistake from Hannibal giving Liverpool a penalty and Salah smashing it in for a 9 pointer. Here is where i really benefited, after seeing the lineup i dropped Reijnders for Foden and man did that pay off. Foden scored the opener and racked up a 24 pointer thanks to him hitting Defcon and getting 2 bonus.

Haaland was the star, i captained him and he returned with a 52 point haul, 2 goals and 3 bonus what else can you want. It could have been even more had Reijnders scored as Haaland would have gotten the assist. Still nothing to complain about except the Bruno pick.

Anyways here is my team for this week and we have bonus points for Liverpool and Everton assets:

I have gone for a 2-2-1 formation this week.

Keepers: I have gone for Henderson as Palace have one of the best defences in the league so far conceding just one goal. You can also go for the bonus and pick Alisson or Pickford. I would have gone for either of those but as there is a limit of 3 players and my slots are full i have picked Henderson.

Defenders: It is a bet on bonus as i have gone for Virgil and Tarkowski. Virgil scored a brilliant header to win the game for Liverpool against Atletico and i am hoping for the same heroics. Tarkowski is great for Defcon, he has hit the threshold in every match so far. You could also look at Lacroix, Munoz, Van de Ven and Mings these are all great options if you do not want the bonus.

Midfielders: I have gone for Palmer, he put on a show against Bayern in the UCL scoring a brilliant goal and having one disallowed due to a marginal offside. Manchester United do not have a single clean sheet this season and have the 4th worst xGA in the league. Salah is my captain, hopefully he comes up with a return like he did against Atletico.

Forwards: Here is where the deadline matters, i currently have Ekitike as Isak had a very underwhelming performance against Atletico mid week and was taken off for the Frenchman in the 58min. I don’t believe he will start given his fitness issues, however should he start i would then transfer out Ekitike for Isak. So remember to check the team news, Liverpool have the 12:30 kick off and start the gameweek.
