Meet Amara Nallo, Liverpool’s Teen Defender With Two Red Cards in Two Games – Know His Age, Salary, & More

Amara Nallo, Liverpool

Born in Enfield, England on November 18, 2006, Amara Nallo (18) is a professional footballer who has quickly become one of the most exciting defensive prospects in the youth ranks of Liverpool. Standing at 1.86m (6 ft 1 in) and listed with English and Sierra Leonean nationalities, Nallo is a versatile centre-back who has drawn high praise for his distinctive style of play.

Nallo’s quick rise meant that he was part of the senior matchday squad for the first time in February 2024 for an FA Cup match.

His official senior debut came against the Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League where he came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute replacing Jayden Danns. That excitement although, was short lived, when, within 4 minutes of his debut, he was red-carded and sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity to the Belgian and the PSV forward, Johan Bakayoko.

It got worse for him last night again, when he played his only second senior game in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace. He was sent off again right after coming on, giving him the undesired record of two red cards in his first two senior games. After this outing, it was clear that the veteran players were behind him. Captain Virgil van Dijk and centre back Ibrahima Konate both went to comfort the heartbroken young man, which observers commended.

After a brief period in West Ham’s youth setup, Nallo made the move to Merseyside in August 2023. At the time of joining, he was aged 16 and was playing initially for Liverpool’s U18s and quickly moved to U21s and not long after that, he started training with the senior squad under Jürgen Klopp.

His former West Ham under-16 coach, Carlton Cole, offered a standout assessment of the youngster, labelling him a “Rolls-Royce of a centre-back,” a compliment that speaks volumes about his composure and technical ability. Carlton went on to highlight Nallo’s “high ceiling,” his “great left foot,” and how he appears “elegant when he moves with the ball”—the signature qualities of a modern ball-playing defender. He can play with both feet, although, his preferred foot is the right. This trait alone makes him dynamic in modern day football. This blend of composure and dynamism caught the eye of Liverpool.

He was called up for the England U18 squad in March 2024 for the Super Cup matches against Czechia, Germany, and the Netherlands. He made his England U-18 debut on March 20, 2024, in a 2-1 victory over Czech Republic. He then went on to feature in the U18 Tri-Nations Trophy in May 2024, which England went on to win.

He also progressed to the England U19 squad, making his debut for that age group on October 12, 2024, in a 4-1 win against the Netherlands in Marbella. He was also called up to the England U-20 squad in November 2024 but he is yet to make a debut for them.

For him, it was the right decision on a personal level: “Obviously there was no doubt in me signing because my family are Liverpool supporters as well. It just all came to plan,” he said.

The move to Mersyside wasn’t immediate, however. He admits, “In the first season I was homesick. But then I got to know that I’m here for a reason and I’m working, so I need to make them proud.”

Furthermore, he was often handed the captain’s armband in the UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2. His leadership style reflects his calm demeanour: “I would say I lead by example – I don’t like shouting.”

Liverpool U21s coach Barry Lewtas remarked on his maturity, saying: “I don’t think we’ve ever asked a lad that young to play at centre-back against senior opposition.”

Nallo’s role model remains Virgil van Dijk, a figure he now shares a training pitch with. Nallo admires his inspiration for his on-field mentality: “First time seeing him, he is massive! You can feel his presence… The way when there’s pressure coming towards him, he does some reverse turn and then plays to the other side to get him out of pressure.”

His current Liverpool U-21 contract runs till June of 2028 but there is no publicly disclosed information about his salary at the moment. He has not signed his Liverpool senior team’s professional contract yet as well. He is currently being handled by the agency CAA Stellar, the same agency that handles some of the notable names like Omar Marmoush, Fermin Lopez, Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Gibbs-White, etc.

His shirt number for Liverpool U-21’s and the senior team is 4 and 64, respectively.

As Nallo reaches a vital moment in his development, his objective is clear and measured: “Just be regular with the first team and see what we get from there and how far I can push on from there.” Even though Amara Nallo’s senior career got off to a rough start, his impressive traits—he’s calm like a “Rolls-Royce,” can play with both feet, and loves to defend—suggest that this talented young man has what it takes to overcome challenges and make a name for himself at the highest level.
