Djed Spence Compared To Antonio Cassano After Auramaxxing Inter Milan Unveil

Inter Milan kicked off their brand new Serie A campaign in absolute style this weekend. Under the guidance of their new manager Cristian Chivu, the Nerazzurri cruised to a dominant four one victory over Monza to set the pace at the top of the league table. While the goals from Hakan Calhanoglu, Piotr Zielinski, Francesco Pio Esposito, and Yann Bisseck gave the home supporters plenty to cheer about, the biggest talking point of the entire weekend actually happened completely off the pitch.

Summer signing Djed Spence was unveiled to the crowd at San Siro as he watched his new teammates secure the three points from the sidelines. The English defender recently secured a permanent transfer from Tottenham following a brilliant bronze medal run with England at the recent World Cup. While fellow Premier League recruits John Stones and Curtis Jones were also settling into their new surroundings in Italy, it was Spence who completely stole the spotlight with a viral fashion statement that sent social media into total meltdown.

The Gen Z auramaxxing phenomenon

When players are not named in the matchday squad, they usually turn up to the stadium wearing a standard club suit or a basic team tracksuit. Spence decided to throw the traditional rulebook completely out of the window. The twenty six year old defender arrived on the touchline rocking a loud New Balance tracksuit jacket, perfectly paired with a set of futuristic reflective Oakley sunglasses. With his signature dreads tied back, the entire look was an absolute visual statement.

Fans on X immediately jumped on the viral footage, praising the defender for delivering a pure masterclass in auramaxxing, the kind sprinters do at Olympics before their 100m race.

The Antonio Cassano fur coat connection

While fans online were obsessed with the modern branding of his outfit, the Italian media immediately recognized the deep cultural weight behind the fashion choice. Italy has a very rich and legendary history of footballing mavericks who express their rebellious personalities through wild clothing choices. The look became such a massive talking point overnight that La Gazzetta dello Sport quickly published an entire article dedicating a deep dive into the style of the new Inter Milan defender. The famous Italian sports newspaper brilliantly compared his touchline aesthetic to legendary Serie A outlaw Antonio Cassano.

Cassano famously broke every unwritten rule in the book back in January 2006 during his official presentation at Real Madrid. While players arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu were strictly expected to wear sharply tailored corporate suits, Cassano strutted in wearing a gigantic fur coat, an open collar, and heavy gold chains. The look completely petrified Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno, who stood next to him in visible disbelief as camera flashes filled the room. Cassano later admitted that the Madrid hierarchy probably thought he was completely insane, joking that only a madman would show up to an official unveiling dressed like that.

What comes next for the English defender

While his explosive aura has clearly won over the fanbase online, the focus will soon shift to his performances on the pitch. Spence is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and dynamic attacking defenders in European football today.

But he faces tough competition in the right back spot as Andy Diouf provided 2 assists against Monza and looks set in this Inter Milan XI.

If he can bring that exact same unquantifiable swagger and elite confidence to the right flank for Cristian Chivu this season, the Nerazzurri supporters are going to have an absolute fan favorite on their hands.

For now though, Djed Spence has officially announced his arrival in Milan without even kicking a football.
