Zlatan Ibrahimovic Joins FOX Sports as Studio Analyst for 2026 FIFA World Cup

As the world prepares for the American Showdown in June for the World Cup, FOX, the main broadcast for the tournament announced the a legendary addition to their coverage.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a sensational player and an even more sensational man, will be part of FOX’s broadcast as a full time studio analyst and color commentary in some games at the World Cup.

Zlatan also posted a tweet following up FOX Soccer’s announcement

Now, if you know anything about Zlatan, you know how he carries himself in the presence of media. In fact, that’s how he carries himself in general.

Even when a young 17 year-old undiscovered Zlatan was bound for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, when Wenger invited Zlatan for a trial, Zlatan famously said, “Zlatan doesn’t do auditions” directly to Wenger.

And in just that tweet from Fox Soccer alone, it is clear how Zlatan stands out amongst traditional players’ media statements. However how much of this character will be on the FOX sports panel during studio analysis and commentary?

This is Ibrahimovic’s debut as a broadcaster. The swede’s only broadcast work, if it can be called that, so far is a guest appearance on Manchester City TV, and some talkshow appearances such as on The Late Late Show with James Corden. For extra credit, we can throw in Ishowspeed’s live stream with Zlatan in 2024.

But clearly, Zlatan’s personality is almost picture perfect for TV. He has the uncanny ability of putting this bold and confident character aside when he knows there’s a moment bigger than him present. Such as when he gave an amazing inspirational speech in the AC Milan dressing room when AC Milan locked up the Serie A title in 2022.

So such special moments in the World Cup won’t be ruined by Zlatan being Zlatan, but it is most likely he will get to be himself when provided for banter on the broadcast. This is what some fans have feared might happen, but it is unlikely as the world of T.V is ruthlessly professional, even for Zlatan. So the Lion will have to adapt to his environment.

The studio dynamic will be most interesting, as it’s hard to believe any of his co-presenters will be able to challenge Zlatan’s views when he is in character. However, Zlatan will probably be able to tone it down so the broadcast atmosphere isn’t uncomfortable.

Most noteable will be his possible pairing up with Alexi Lalas. Lalas is a controversial figure in American Soccer Broadcasting. Generally giving views which seem to have some funding behind them and also regarded as being annoying on color commentary in American broadcast of European games.

For F1 fans, it’s basically how Danica Patrick was viewed on F1TV broadcasts.

Overall, Ibrahimovic would obviously have amazing insight in the game. a 20+ year career across La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Ligue 1, and the all-time leading goalscorer for Sweden, his body of work was no question during the discussion of the deal with FOX Sports.

However, it is fair to say, as it was with the previous World Cup in Qatar, the fans reaction is mixed. If not, repulsive. Many issues have been made out on Twitter over USA’s eligibility for this World cup with ongoing geopolitical tensions, unfair consumer costs and much more.

Fans underneath the reply of Zlatan’s tweet seem to label him as a sell-out, as he’s never done broadcast work before, but perhaps the money on the table with FOX and the World Cup was too tempting not to take. Some even took shots at his career, saying he never had a legacy.

Some tweets are in support of Zlatan’s new job, so the world isn’t fully dwelling in negativity.

It’s sad that Zlatan’s debut in the Football Television world is overshadowed by a controversial world cup host, and although there might be some truth about FOX Sports presenting a deal too good to pass up for even Zlatan, it’s important to note in his playing days, the striker wasn’t known for chasing dollar bills. He turned down many lucrative offers from Chinese clubs to stay with AC Milan. And even when he did go to LA Galaxy in 2018, his desire to compete in Top flight European football overturned that decision a year later.

And I guarantee you, as this tweet puts it:
