Portugal Football Body Backtracks On Logo Change After Horror Reviews

Portugal National Football Team

The Portugal Football team landed in North America with probably their strongest ever squad in a World Cup and a dream to finally lift the coveted trophy.

This in all likelihood being Cristiano Ronaldo’s last hurrah at the mega tournament, has added extra spotlight to their campaign as every match, every move, every decision of theirs being monitored that much minutely.

Though for many, Ronaldo and co till now have failed to perform according to the true potential of the squad, the team have still reached the round of 16 with their victory Croatia thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s equalizing penalty and a 90 plus minutes winning header from Goncalo Ramos.

As the team, despite not being at their fluent best, still managing to surpass opponents one after the other, the Portuguese FA have landed in a completely different controversy.

While Ronaldo and co are applying their trait in North America, on July 1, 2026, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) officially unveiled a brand-new. The updated crest can be seen on the official FPF website and was rolled out across the federation’s digital platforms.

Though the new emblem has Portuguese national colors of red, green, and gold, it showcases a marked shift from the classic emblem that had the traditional Portuguese shield to a much more simplified and minimalist version of it and the traditional cross was completely omitted altogether.

However, this more corporate like digital first renderation of the emblem had the Portuguese fans fuming as many believed this emblem destroys the originality, throws the history, tradition and culture, in short the whole identity of the land which were showcased through their iconic symbol over decades.

While some simply hope that the new logo does not appear on the team jersey, some believed it the worst logo change in the history, some started a petition to end what they termed as ‘nonsense’ and a few even went as far as wanting Portugal team’s defeat following this logo change decision.

Realising the uproar amongst the fans, the Portuguese federation quickly backtracked on their decision and had to issue a statement clearing the air and claiming the new emblem will not appear on the national kit and the so called modernized, simplified design is restricted strictly to institutional and commercial branding of the federation.

As the dust settles down with this new crest controversy, the Portugal team will once again take the field with their ever recognisable crest on their jerseys on 6th July against the European champions Spain, as they look to secure a quarter final berth in the World Cup.
