Aston Villa make contact over £8m winger after European audition

Aston Villa, Oğuz Aydın

Aston Villa’s emphatic European victory has offered Unai Emery another reason to examine his attacking options ahead of the January transfer window. The manager has built a squad that possesses experience and emerging talent, yet sustaining that balance requires competition for places across the forward line.

Nicolas Jackson and Tammy Abraham provide central striking options, while Alejandro Garnacho brings pace and directness from wide positions. Ibrahim Mbaye and Alysson offer additional attacking depth, with Brian Madjo and George Hemmings providing younger alternatives. Emery must manage those options carefully as Villa pursue domestic objectives alongside their European campaign.

Villa’s 6-0 Champions League victory over Fenerbahçe on Wednesday, 14 October, delivered a memorable night at Villa Park. Jackson scored twice, Ross Barkley added two goals, and Abraham completed the rout after Johan Manzambi opened the scoring. The result displayed Villa’s attacking potential, although the performance of one visiting player offered an unexpected talking point.

Despite Fenerbahçe’s defensive collapse, their Turkish international Oğuz Aydın produced encouraging numbers across the full 90 minutes. His passing accuracy reached 91%, and he created one big chance while registering three key passes. His expected goals figure stood at 0.33, with expected assists at 0.68.

Turkish newspaper Sabah reported on 17 October that Aston Villa officials had made contact with Fenerbahçe to discuss the 25-year-old winger. According to the report, relayed by Sport Witness, Villa requested further information about his situation and the financial terms required for a possible January move.

Aydın joined Fenerbahçe from Alanyaspor in July 2024. He has accumulated 3,663 minutes across 83 appearances for the Turkish club, recording nine goals and 15 assists. His limited playing time could make a move attractive, although neither the player’s intentions nor Fenerbahçe’s willingness to negotiate has been confirmed.

His domestic campaign offers further encouragement. Aydın has registered two goals and three assists in eight Süper Lig appearances, totalling 297 minutes. He contributed both a goal and an assist against Çaykur Rizespor on 10 October.

Across his Champions League appearances against Roma and Villa, he completed 46 of 49 passes, maintaining a 93% passing accuracy. His contract runs until 2028, while his reported market value stands around £7.5m. That figure does not establish Fenerbahçe’s asking price, and no formal offer has been confirmed. Sport Witness previously reported Everton‘s scouting interest in June.

Aydın could give Villa another senior option in wide areas, particularly if Emery wants greater competition for Garnacho and additional flexibility around Jackson and Abraham. His passing accuracy, chance creation and crossing ability suggest he can contribute to controlled attacking moves rather than relying entirely on individual dribbling.

The Turkish winger’s defensive work rate and ability to retain possession under pressure would require careful assessment before Villa commit to a deal. The Premier League presents different physical and tactical demands, while his relatively limited playing time at Fenerbahçe raises questions about consistency across a full season.

A potential fee around £8m would provide a useful negotiating benchmark, rather than a confirmed price. His contract until 2028 gives Fenerbahçe leverage, and Villa must establish whether his performances justify the investment.

For Emery, the attraction lies in adding a player who could challenge established attackers without demanding an immediate starting role. Aydın’s European display provides encouraging evidence, but Villa should judge him across a broader sample before treating him as the answer to their attacking needs.
