A devastating week for Charlton Athletic as they lose an integral member of their fan community who is often considered a family of the Addicks.
The club mourned the passing of their long time fan Norman Barker, fondly known as “Headphones Norm”.
On Saturday, Charlton horned against Portsmouth in a Championship fixture. At the 12th Minute, Norman fell ill in his seat in the Covered Lower End and received first aid from his fellow supporters and staffs right away.
He was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away. The game was abandoned and the club announced a tribute to the fan before their game against Middlesborough.
Norman Barker had been a constant in every Charlton game since 1968.
He is known as the “headphones Norm” for his unique look, always with a headphone around his neck or as listening to latest results.

He also used to wear a vest with Charlton badges and a number of other club badges adorned with his favourite “Davy Crockett” hat.
Known for his legacy of fandom, he was awarded with the supporter of the year award from first team manager Jones. His loss is pretty much an identity loss for the club.
The club statement on their programme stated “Charlton Athletic are devastated by the loss of one of its most loyal and recognisable faces, Norman Barker. Norman will be truly missed by all at Charlton Athletic and everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
Charlton Athletic will honour Norman’s life when the club host Middlesbrough at The Valley on Tuesday evening”.

During the game against Middlesborough, all the players and the fans in the stadium paid a silent tribute before the kickoff but the heartwarming incident was during the game when an unplanned pleasant moment happened with greater understanding between the people at the stadium.
At the 13th minute, the ball went out of play and the fans started a tributing applause.
Referee Oliver Langford understood the assignment and paused the game respectfully.
More overwhelming was that the Boro fans and players also joined in with the applause tribute.
The act has received massive accolades and the friendship has been respected between the club fans beyond the on field battles.

Norman Barker’s absence is a true loss to the indigenous examples of passionate football fans.
But it is also an example of how much trust and love the club and fans have in agreement between each other where each side of the parties pay equal respect and affection towards the other.
