So ends the summer transfer window of this season, with some of the most controversial transfers that the game has seen. From Aleksandar Isak’s long-drawn saga to Marc Guehi’s failed transfer, this summer transfer window shook the Premier League, leading to even the most reliable Fabrizio Romano making wrong “Here We Go” calls. Liverpool have spent over 400 million pounds this season, their biggest transfer activity ever, and clubs like Man United have been extremely active in the window too.
But wait, we are not going to talk about the deadline day. No, as a matter of fact, it’s not a player transfer, but a manager transfer next season that could be very well on the cards.
Back in the borough of Croydon, London, Crystal Palace FC have a few problems to look at. Last season was the most successful one for the humble London club, with new manager Oliver Glasner delivering a major giant-killing upset at the FA Cup Final, when his Crystal Palace team defeated Manchester City. Glasner began the new season with a convincing win over Liverpool for the Community Shield, again shocking audiences and winning over new fans for a club that harnessed the talents of Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi.
However, as is the destiny of many European clubs, the undeniable pull for playing for a “big” club behaves like the strongest magnet, and such has been the situation at Selhurst Park. Glasner has had a few disagreements with the Palace ownership in a transfer window that has seen major outgoings.
The departure of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal was the first major blow to the team, but it was common knowledge that Eze had been on the radar of the Top 6 for more than a couple of seasons, and his transfer was more of a question of “when” than “if”. Glasner’s relationship with Palace chairman Steve Parish is a bit frayed at this point. With their prominent center-back Marc Guehi in the last year of his contract, the Palace manager has felt disarrayed with the prospect of discussing potential replacements with the ownership.
Furthermore, Guehi’s position in the entire saga has been faintly mismanaged by the Crystal Palace hierarchy. Guehi had been keen to leave Palace after a very successful tenure where he captained the Eagles. His rock-solid performances in Glasner’s back four earned the 25-year-old a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s new-look England national team. With the end of deadline day, Guehi’s transfer problems hang like a cloud on Crystal Palace’s season.
Talking to the press after a win against Norwegian side Fredrikstad, the Austrian said, “I think we could have behaved much better than we did. It’s not the best way to start the season. I think we are below the edge.
“If Marc leaves maybe I will try my boots because I was a centre back. We have to act. It’s Crystal Palace’s future, and we need to add numbers.”
After most football publications and journalists, including a certain someone named Fabrizio Romano, announced Guehi joining Liverpool for a cut-price 35million pound deal, the transfer collapsed due to complications, leaving the centre-back in the lurch despite personal agreements with Liverpool. Glasner is believed to have blocked the transfer, and Guehi started Crystal Palace’s resounding 3-0 victory against Aston Villa. As is seen in the long annals of footballing history, the manager, defensive about his team and wary to let go of players so late into the window without proper replacements lined up, is at loggerheads with club ownership, who have to balance finances and chargesheets. As Palace weren’t able to bring Guehi’s replacement Igor, from Brighton, Glasner possibly pulled the plug at the last moment. Glasner’s unhappiness with the ownership might lead him to change clubs in the foreseeable future.

Reports have now emerged that Glasner probably won’t be at Selhurst Park next year. The Austrian is ambitious, and the Manchester United hotseat, which has given Ruben Amorim sleepless nights, could be calling Glasner soon. Although there haven’t been any official announcements, it is widely known and accepted that Manchester United stakeholders INEOS, the conglomerate owned by Jim Ratcliffe, are not very happy with their manager Ruben Amorim. Amorim has had a very shaky start to the season after a promising pre-season. After a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal away, United drew Fulham (a match where the ever-reliable Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty), and then, in the most shocking event of the new season, were eliminated from the Carabao Cup after losing to fourth-division side Grimsby Town on penalties. United made a nerve-wracking comeback against Burnley at home, with Bruno scoring a 90th minute penalty to edge United ahead 3-2. Amorim’s position is now under serious risk, and Glasner has an eye at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s head would be on the chopping block soon if problems keep persisting at United. Having been backed heavily in the summer window, the United hierarchy have serious expectations for the club. We will get more information once the international break is over and club football resumes.
