Alexander Isak Speaks: The Best Moments from His First Interview in Liverpool Red

Alexander Isak, Liverpool

It’s another rainy day in Merseyside. The clouds are out, the sun slowly waltzing behind the overcast sky. As Scousers sip their tea and read their morning newspaper, a faint smile tends to catch up to their lips.

Liverpool have signed striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record transfer fee of £125m

The long-drawn saga has finally come to an end. After what proved to be one of the biggest stories of the last summer transfer window, Isak, the Swedish striker, finally got his preferred move to Liverpool after plying his trade at Newcastle United.

He arrived at the AXA training centre for his first interview as a Liverpool player, donning the official training kit. What followed was a steely, stoic demeanour from Arne Slot’s latest recruit.

“I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I am super happy to be a part of this team, this club, and everything it stands for. It’s something I am proud of and I’m really looking forward to it”.

There is a sense of calmness and detachment in Isak. Naturally, being at the center of a long-drawn transfer saga takes its toll on the best of footballers, putting them under media and fan pressure, as well as making them draw the ire of former fans. Isak needs to keep holding on to his steely resolve.

When asked about how he felt joining Liverpool, he was subtle in his mannerisms, calmly reflecting on the transfer saga,“It’s mixed emotions. Some relief, but lots of pride, happiness…you know. Just happy that it’s done and I can get back to work. Looking forward to seeing the teammates and the fans, and just getting back out there.”

Relief, now that’s a word seldom used in interviews. However, if anyone feels the need to have some relief in their mind, it has to be Isak. Newcastle had denied him the opportunity to move all summer, despite reports of a gentleman’s agreement between Isak and Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager, who wanted to keep him at the club. Isak went on a strike, refusing to train and appear for the team in the beginning of the season, feeling betrayed by the club ownership.

The Geordies of Tyneside seem to have a different opinion on the whole situation, though. They aren’t happy with Isak holding the club at ransom, and Isak’s leaving has left a bitter taste in their mouths. Newcastle under their new middle-eastern owners and young manager Eddie Howe have slowly begun their climb to the top of the English football pyramid, and revamp their status as a historical club with millions of fans. Isak, a world-class striker with impeccable finishing and athleticism, has been heavily instrumental in their recent success since arriving from Dortmund in 2022. His departure has been met with brickbats instead of bouquets from Newcastle.

Isak doesn’t seem to let the noise around him distract him.

“It’s been a long summer. Just looking forward, and you know, not looking in the past. Just delighted that it’s done now, and I can get back to doing what I love the most, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

When asked about the prospect of facing his new teammate, captain Virgil van Dijk, in training, Isak was clear in his respect for him, “We’re talking about some of the best defenders in the world. It’s a big challenge, but personally I loved those types of challenges.

Talking about Anfield, Isak said, “The atmosphere is extraordinary, and I’m excited to be a part of that.”

“It’s so exciting. I think its something you can’t even…it’s difficult to put in words, I think you have to experience it and then explain. I think we all know what Liverpool is about, what their fans are about as well.

At the end of the official interview, is the most sensational piece of the puzzle. The contract signed and sealed, Isak says, with a direct, hard-boiled response. “I wanna win everything.”

That statement, for sure, will send chills down the spines of players and fans alike. Isak is not someone who speaks too much, relying on his feet to do the talking. But with that statement, he for sure seems ready for the challenge that will come playing for the defending champions. Wonder how the reaction would be when he plays against his old club at St. James Park. Guess we’ll know very soon.
