Why Liverpool Fans Think New Third Kit Promo Takes Swipe at Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold

In his time as a Liverpool FC player, Trent Alexander Arnold was one of the most important members of the squad. The English full-back was admired for his passing, free kicks, crosses, and offensive ability, although his defensive skills left much to be desired, as that was what he was supposed to do most.

Still, Trent was part of the reason why Liverpool FC has grown so much in recent years. But everything must come to an end, and it came when it was revealed that the English full-back was leaving for the Spanish giant, Real Madrid.

He practically sought to leave the team so he could join Real Madrid. This obviously upset the Scouse club’s fans, so Trent has been the target of criticism ever since.

Playing second fiddle to the veteran Dani Carvajal, Trent hasn’t had the start at the Spanish club that many expected, but he’s slowly improving as the style of the Spanish league is different from that of the English league.

Still, Liverpool fans haven’t forgotten the betrayal from Trent, and that’s why many believe Liverpool FC itself gave him a little nod in its new jersey unveiling.

Liverpool and Adidas dropped the much-awaited green third kit for 25/26 season and the promo featured a local scouser showing ‘what it’s like to live in a city like Liverpool’. This was a nod to the many new signings LFC made in the summer transfer window and it also featured their newest arrival Alexander Isak in a post-credit scene.

In the 1.04 mark there is a scene where the protagonist of the ad says “Just don’t get too big for your boots”.

The phrase ‘too big for your boots’ refers to a person whose ego has become inflated, leading them to believe they are superior to others.

For those unaware, despite being a Scouser and academy graduate who won every major trophy with the club, Trent let his contract run down even after he was offered a £300,000 per week salary by the Reds.

The fact he didn’t agree to a new contract at the time, thus keeping the Reds from getting a fee from his departure, cemented the notion that he got “too big for his boots”, which is why a lot of fans have problems with him until this very day.

Many fans viewed it as disloyalty, prioritizing personal ambition and a higher signing bonus over loyalty to the club that shaped him.

Obviously, whether the promo featured a dig for TAA isn’t official or certain, but given the way Trent decided to end his career at Liverpool FC, we could say it was a nod to Trent.

The point is, no player is bigger than the club, and Trent, as much as he wanted to leave the club to go to Real Madrid, didn’t have to force his way out. He practically got rid of the club that made him one of the best right-backs in the world, and that’s not right.

This isn’t the first time this has happened in the world of football, nor will it be the last. We saw it with Kylian Mbappé at PSG and with Neymar at FC Barcelona, and with Trent it happened again.
