FUT Champions, often called the Weekend League, remains the pinnacle of competitive play in Football Ultimate Team. As players strive for top tier rewards, the integrity and fairness of the matchmaking system are constantly under scrutiny. While official details on the precise formula are rarely fully disclosed, community experience and developer updates for FC 26 hint at a complex system. Here is a breakdown of what is understood about matchmaking in the FC 26 iteration of FUT Champs.
The most consistently reported and widely accepted theory for matchmaking in FUT Champions Finals revolves around a system called Form based Matchmaking. The Principle is that the system attempts to match players with an opponent who has a similar Form record for that specific weekend’s Finals run. Here is how it Works, a player starts the Finals at a base Form of 0 then one Win increases the player’s Form by +1 and a Loss decreases the player’s Form by -1. When searching for an opponent, the system looks for another player whose current Form is within a certain range
This mechanism is designed to ensure players face increasingly difficult opponents as they win (higher Form) and get a potentially easier matchup after a loss (lower Form), theoretically leading to a more balanced competition over the full set of matches. While skill/Form is a factor, all competitive matchmaking also prioritizes a good connection. The system aims to find the closest geographically available opponent within the established Form range. This is often cited by players who would prefer a slightly longer wait for a better ping connection, as latency significantly impacts high level play.
Following the first Fut Champs week in FC 26, significant community discussion and evidence emerged suggesting the traditional Form based matchmaking system was not functioning correctly or was entirely disabled for a period. This has now been confirmed by EA themselves saying “we’ve identified and addressed an issue affecting the Form aspect of matchmaking in FUT Champions.” So expect this week to be much harder than the first week.
Ahead of this weekend, we've identified and addressed an issue affecting the Form aspect of matchmaking in FUT Champions. Generally speaking you can expect to matchmake with players who are in similar Form to you.

This led to many players having much easier opponents last week and receiving much better rewards. So expect champs to be even more sweaty once you reach 6-7 wins. Good luck to anyone competing in champs this week you will need it.
