Whenever football fans turn to watch the pre- or post-programmes on CBS, the show never fails to entertain. Recently, Mike Grella’s takes on Napoli have been garnering a lot of attention from the club’s fans due to his overly critical reviews of the team’s tactics.
During the Serie A coverage, the ex-New York Red Bulls player admitted that he dislikes the Italian club. However, as a full-time pundit, fans would expect him to offer a much more unbiased perspective on the club. Despite this, his constant grilling of the club has become somewhat humorous, much like Roy Keane bashing on a performance.
On the show, Grella did not even disguise his feelings a he said, “To see Antonio Conte get that goal at the end of the game and start screaming, yelling, celebrating — only for it to be taken away… I enjoyed that,” he confessed with a smirk that could be seen from Turin to Times Square. “How many games did they not deserve points, and got the points?”
Over-the-top look at the Italian champions forced the studio into laughter, despite his seriousness. Overall, it’s just Napoli’s loss; he’s in the studio and not inside the dressing room drawing parallels between the two sides of football.

Nonetheless, Grella, in a nutshell, is much like the new age of pundits who bring a certain freshness to the broadcasting scene, rather than just reading off a teleprompter. He is chaotic, unpredictable, and a little bit ruthless, which would definitely be viewed as a fun person to have at parties.
Napoli’s recent form has been far from its best. While they look solid sometimes, they haven’t been consistent, and their unevenness has elicited such reactions from pundits like Grella. They have conceded six times in their last six games and have scored around 12 goals. While these stats are decent, they are still far from what defines a champion side.
Their recent slip-up against Como was another shocker as Antonio Conte’s side is known for its disciplined and structured tactics. However, Cesc Fabregas’ side outclasses them tactically, which would force Conte into shifting his game plan for the remainder of the season. His defence often involves three or four players with fullbacks providing width in transitions.
They are known for their defence and efficient counter-attacking ability while also maintaining possession. However, against Como, they could hardly hold the ball in control. They rely more on what many pundits would refer to as an ‘old-school’ way of football. They put pressure on their half and then move into quick transitions and create chances.
As football evolves, this breed of football may also appear unappealing to many, as we have become accustomed to watching the beautiful football played by Pep Guardiola’s teams or Jürgen Klopp’s gegenpress.
However, the only breed of football that works is the one that extracts results, and if, for Conte, his way works best, then nobody’s opinion really carries much weight, whether it’s fans on social media or an ex-pro who is living his glory days by saying controversial words about his team.
With a career spanning Europe, in England and Denmark, and eventually the MLS, Grella has adapted to modern times. He is already one of the leading broadcasters from the American soccer scene and is a regular speaker on Paramount+ and CBS. Between cheeky banter and dead-serious takes, he offers a unique voice when compared to other pundits like Thierry Henry, Micah Richards Jamie Carragher.
However, one thing to keep in mind is that Grella’s disdain for Napoli is not just for gaining views or reactions. He genuinely dislikes the Italian club out of spite, as he reiterated how the club has won too many unfair points and still somehow managed to cruise to victory. “There’s been so many games where they’ve looked off it, slow, predictable,” he said in a recent GOAL feature. “And yet, somehow, they scrape results.”
With Napoli set to visit Juventus at the Allianz Stadium, the players mustn’t do anything remotely controversial, as Mike Grella may have hung up his boots, but if they end up giving him an opportunity, he could still score a screamer against Napoli.
