Andoni Iraola’s name is already doing the rounds in Premier League circles, but the Bournemouth boss has now found himself trending for a very different reason: football Twitter has dragged him into the Marvel multiverse.
The Bournemouth boss is already set for a major summer of speculation after confirming he will leave the Cherries at the end of the season.
Iraola, who arrived on the south coast in 2023, has built one of the league’s most admired teams: intense, brave, aggressive out of possession and fearless against bigger opponents.
Bournemouth’s rise under him has not been built on caution. Instead, his side has pressed high, attacked with purpose and repeatedly shown they can trouble the Premier League elite.
That work has made Iraola one of the most attractive coaching names in England.
Bournemouth have enjoyed a record-breaking spell under the Spaniard, with reports noting that he turned down extension offers before deciding this was the right time to move on.

His departure announcement has naturally put several clubs on alert, but one link has recently caught the imagination more than most: Liverpool.
With Arne Slot’s future being questioned after a difficult campaign, Iraola has been mentioned as a possible candidate if Liverpool decides to make a change.
[🟢] “In case Liverpool decide to change their mind… [after] the end of season review, eventually Andoni Iraola could be a candidate. He used to work with Richard Hughes. For sure, he would be a candidate. He has an offer from Crystal Palace but he wants to understand which one… pic.twitter.com/Q4HFbSaAWQ

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes also previously worked at Bournemouth, and Iraola’s success there has only strengthened his reputation.
That existing relationship has been repeatedly cited as one reason his name keeps surfacing in conversations around Anfield.
But while fans debate whether Iraola could actually replace Slot, Twitter has found a very different angle!
Fans are convinced Andoni Iraola looks like a total doppelganger of Doctor Octopus of Spiderman 2 fame.

Supporters have pointed to Iraola’s resemblance to Alfred Molina’s version of Doctor Octopus, especially when the Bournemouth boss is pictured staring intensely from the dugout.
Iraola already gives off the aura of a tactician obsessing over every tiny detail, which fits perfectly with the mad-scientist energy fans are leaning into.
Iraola’s touchline look too; dark coat, serious expression, swept-back hair and intense “genius plotting something dangerous” energy has fans joking that Liverpool are not appointing a manager, but recruiting Doc Ock.
Some supporters have taken it further, dragging Florian Wirtz into the joke.
With Wirtz already at Liverpool after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, fans have joked that the German playmaker is Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, setting up a potential reunion with Iraola as the tactical Doc Ock figure looming over Anfield.

Fans have also related their situation, comparing it to the scene in Spider-Man 2 where Peter Parker first meets Doctor Octavius. Peter Parker was called ‘brilliant’ and ‘lazy’, something that has also been used to describe Wirtz.
While, as an intense, gegenpressing coach who demands relentless work off the ball, the idea of Iraola telling Wirtz to work harder makes it feel highly accurate to how an actual situation of them meeting would go.

However, for now, Iraola’s mechanical arms are not confirmed to be heading to Anfield.
With just one game to go, Slot is still in charge; Liverpool have made no official move, and Iraola’s next job remains unclear.
So Spider-Man and Doc Ock reuniting in Merseyside is still a rumour waiting to unfold over the summer.
