Is This The Most Stacked Sports Selfie Ever? Internet Thinks So

2026 FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi, Rio Ferdinand

The most legendary assortment of athletes and pop-stars gathered under one roof in New York on Friday. The Fanatics Fest played host to the official FIFA World Cup 2026 final pre-match press conference and gave the tradition a spectacular twist.

In a bid to make the event one of a kind and truly American, the fiesta included autograph signings and a profile of high-names. Unlike a traditional press interaction, the squad members of Spain and Argentina were more exposed to the crowd as they made their way around the venue.

At the centre of it all were the captains and coaches from the two finalists. Representing Spain on the stage were Rodri and Luis de la Fuente, while La Albiceleste skipper Lionel Messi was flanked by namesake head coach Scaloni and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

FIFA then sprung another surprise by asking legends from all across the sports board to ask the tournament protagonists questions instead of just the mainstream media. The men in question included record Grand Slams winner Novak Djokovic, record Super Bowl-holder Tom Brady, and the only 4x Olympic basketball gold medalist Kevin Durant.

A barrage of insightful inquiries followed. Djokovic was occupied with the pressures of the highest level, while Brady wondered about the sheer co-incidences involved in pitting Messi against Lamine Yamal in the final.

Managing proceedings from the stage was legendary Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand. But no event in the States is ever complete without a sprinkle of Hollywood.

One of the best-selling comedians of all time Kevin Hart brought the glamour alongside hip-hop sensation Travis Scott. Both men have been intricately involved with the tournament this far. While Hart hosted the World Cup draw show, Scott has been spotted at various matches through the course of the World Cup.

One by one, the stars coalesced on the stage alongside the men ready for a date with destiny in a couple of days’ time. After an intriguing session, the shutters finally closed and the mics were put down.

“Sunday is going to be a great show,” Scaloni perfectly summed it all up.

Little did New York know the most legendary part of the night was yet to come.

With the crowd watching on, the legendary names all gathered together and Durant clicked an instant hall-of-fame selfie. Barely a face can be seen in the background, with everyone having their phones up to capture pop-culture history unfolding in front of their eyes.

X immediately went bonkers, to put it mildly.

“There is an illegal amount of greatness in a single picture. Messi, Brady, Djokovic, and KD in one room right before the World Cup final is historic. The greatest selfie ever? It has to be up there”, an awed fan queried.

“All smiles, that’s the beauty of this sport uniting people off-pitch, rivals on the pitch”, proffered another.

“Kevin Durant, Messi, Brady, Djokovic and Kevin Hart all in one selfie before Sunday’s final tells you exactly how big this World Cup has gotten in the States. Four years ago that kind of crossover crowd was not walking into a soccer event”, the awe kept growing.

“Messi standing there like he was forced to be in the group project”, banter quickly followed suit.

“This is one of those instantly legendary photos u look back on in 25 years and ppl question if it was ai or not”, captured the moment’s essence perfectly.

“This really happened… and no it’s not AI”, Rio himself posted as if in reply, on his X account.

However, the consensus was far to get. Fans were quick to fall back to the photo from FIFA’s The Best ceremony in 2017, where the World XI all featured in a selfie alongside Hollywood enigma and host Idris Elba. Faces in the star-studded photograph included Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Marcelo, Toni Kroos, and Gianluigi Buffon amongst others.

All in all, the event was a perfect curtain raiser to the ultimate football match. The next time Messi and Rodri appear face to face, it’ll be on the grandest stages of them all.
