Newcastle United suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League after their latest 1-0 loss to Aston Villa, and slipped down to 11th in the table.
Manager Matthias Jaissle is under pressure to deliver results at St James’ Park, especially after the substantial investments the club has made in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies signed several players to strengthen their squad, but currently the club are going through a rough patch, having won only once in five Premier League games.
It has been suggested that Newcastle United are looking in the transfer market for a new right-back, despite signing Amar Dedic in the summer.
Dedic arrived at Newcastle United from Portuguese outfit Benfica for a transfer fee of approximately £29M, and put pen to paper on a five-year deal.
The 24-year-old was previously managed by Jaissle at FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg, and the pair also won the Austrian Bundesliga title in 2023; the previous bond was a deciding factor behind his signing.
Dedic has started his Newcastle United career in strong fashion, but after he suffered a hamstring injury, he has been dropped to the bench, and Lewis Miley has been deployed at right-back.
At the moment, first-choice right-back Tino Livramento is sidelined due to an injury and is expected to miss another week or two.
Now, Newcastle United are tracking the development of Brazilian right-back Wesley, who currently plays for Italian outfit AS Roma, according to Caught Offside.
However, the Magpies are not the only club interested in his signature, as Manchester United and Arsenal are also keen on the young defender.
Roma paid around £25M to sign Wesley from Brazilian side Flamengo in the summer of 2025, and he is tied down to the club until 2030.
The Giallorossi have slapped a £50M price tag on Wesley’s head, and it remains to be seen which interested clubs are willing to match the asking price.
Wesley is one of the best attacking full-backs in Serie A right now, due to his rapid acceleration, pinpoint crossing ability, and the ability to stretch opposition defences during attacks.
Besides that, the 23-year-old is a versatile player, as he can play anywhere on the right flank and he can also be deployed as a left-back if required.
The Brazilian right-back is also a sound defender, provides defensive cover to the centre-backs, and is very efficient at blocking crosses with sliding tackles.
Jaissle prefers to play 3-1-6 in attack and a narrow 4-42 low block during defence, which relies heavily on stamina, speed, pressing intensity, and good chemistry among players.
In this system, Wesley could fit in quickly, as he possesses the speed, tackling ability, and stamina to contribute both in attack as well as in defence.
But Wesley is not the only right-back on the club’s radar, as Newcastle United are also tracking Benfica youngster Daniel Banjaqui, who could leave on a cut-price deal.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle United can fend off competition from Manchester United and Arsenal to sign Wesley in the upcoming winter transfer window.
