Ronald Araujo’s loan move to the Premier League ahead of the 2026-27 season has been a blessing for both the Uruguayan and Liverpool FC. Despite being one of the club captains, Araujo struggled massively for Barcelona in the last couple of seasons, where he committed costly mistakes in high-pressure games.
Persistent issues with injuries and these defensive inconsistencies at times fueled Araujo’s move to the Merseyside Club. The 27-year-old even had a slow start to his Premier League career at the club in the initial few games, but since then he has gone from strength to strength in the right-back position, despite being a CB originally.
Quickly but steadily, Araujo has become one of the fan favorites for the club. His aggressive defending and the knack for leaving it all on the pitch in front of the backline have won over the fans. Furthermore, Araujo’s knack for chipping in with crucial games has been evident in Liverpool as well, where he has scored in Champions League games against LASK and Villarreal.
Now, with such performances in a short span of time, there are echoes around the club that Liverpool should finalize a permanent deal with Barcelona. Amidst this, the Catalan club has reportedly approached Liverpool for the same as well. Football journalist Artur Petrosyan reports that the Premier League side already has a £47million (55M Euros) clause to sign the player permanently.
However, if Barcelona wants Liverpool to sign the player even before the conclusion of the season-long loan deal, the latter can ask for a discounted price.
Reports suggest that Liverpool is also eager to sign the player permanently in January, but is eyeing a discounted price of £40M-45M. This will give both the clubs a clear route towards negotiation in the winter transfer window, with the move giving Liverpool a perfect opportunity to lock up the Uruguayan defender on a long-term deal.
Head coach Andoni Iraola is quite happy with the player and has made him a definite starter alongside Virgil Van Dijk in the back line. Besides, Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward is also quite interested in a permanent move to the Merseyside club for Araujo. With these factors considered, talks around Araujo’s permanent move seem to be making good progress.
However, Ronald Araujo’s agent, Eduardo Crnja, hasn’t shared any updates regarding this move. “Ronald is performing well, we’re very happy with what he’s offering, but it’s still too early to talk about his future,” he told WinWin Sports. “He feels great, he’s happy to be playing for Liverpool and helping the club and his teammates, as he’s already said.”
With the winter transfer window just a couple of months away, it will now need to be seen whether Liverpool can convince Barca to accept a discounted deal over an early permanent signing. Until then, Araujo will continue to give it his all on the field for Liverpool’s upcoming games, which include crucial games against Manchester United, Arsenal, and Fenerbahce.
