Latest Odds and Predictions for Sparta Prague v Bournemouth Europa League Match

AC Sparta Prague, AFC Bournemouth, Europa League

Bournemouth have barely put a foot wrong over the past few weeks, and their trip to Prague offers another opportunity to show just how far they have come under Marco Rose. The Cherries travel to face Sparta Prague on Thursday night looking to extend their winning run and maintain their perfect start to the Europa League campaign.

Their recent results make for impressive reading. Bournemouth have beaten Manchester United, Aston Villa and AC Milan by three-goal margins, while also picking up victories against Leeds and Sunderland. They have scored 16 goals and kept six consecutive clean sheets during that run, turning what could have been a difficult spell of fixtures into a statement of intent.

Their European performances have been just as convincing. Bournemouth have won all three of their opening league-phase matches, scoring eight goals and conceding just once. Victories over Real Sociedad, Sturm Graz and AC Milan have put Rose’s side in a strong position, and they now have an opportunity to take another step towards the knockout stages.

Sparta, meanwhile, have struggled to find the same consistency. Brian Priske’s side have won just two of their last seven matches in all competitions and are coming into this fixture after a goalless draw against Bohemians. They will have the advantage of playing at home, but Bournemouth arrive with considerably more momentum.

The Czech side should not be dismissed, particularly given their record at the epet ARENA. However, stopping a Bournemouth team that currently looks comfortable against both domestic and European opposition will be a different challenge altogether.

Team News

Sparta Prague could be without several players for Thursday’s fixture. John Mercado is among the biggest potential absentees after picking up an injury towards the end of October. The Ecuadorian has scored seven goals in all competitions this season, making his possible absence a significant blow to Priske’s attacking options.

Adam Sevinsky, Matej Ryneš, Adam Karabec, Emmanuel Uchenna, Ondrej Penxa and Magnus Kofod Andersen are also listed among Sparta’s unavailable players. There is some uncertainty over whether a few of those carrying injuries could return in time, but the hosts may have to manage without a sizeable part of their squad.

Bournemouth also have a few existing fitness concerns. Julian Araujo, Alex Scott and Alex Toth are listed as unavailable, while Veljko Milosavljevic is doubtful after picking up a knock. Marco Rose has reported no new injury concerns, however, and could use the fixture to rotate his squad with another Premier League game approaching.

Amine Adli has given Rose another attacking option since returning from injury, scoring three goals in four games. Evanilson is also in excellent form, with five goals in his last six appearances.

Possible Lineups

Sparta Prague: Surovcik; Hoever, Son, Guddal, Suchomel; Mannsverk, Sochurek; Jurasek, Vydra, Alcocer; Brunes.

Bournemouth: Di Gregorio; Hill, Diakite, Silva, Soler; Cook, Adams; Gannon-Doak, Kluivert, Tavernier; Evanilson.

These are projected lineups rather than confirmed team selections. Bournemouth are expected to rotate, and the final defensive selection remains uncertain.

Head-to-Head

Thursday’s fixture will be the first competitive meeting between Sparta Prague and Bournemouth. Neither side has a previous European result to draw upon, making this an unfamiliar test for both managers.

Where Will the Game Be Decided?

Bournemouth’s biggest advantage heading into this fixture is the confidence running through their squad. Six consecutive wins have given Rose’s side a platform to play with freedom, and their recent performances suggest they are not relying on one player to produce the goods.

The European numbers underline that difference. Bournemouth have scored eight goals and conceded just once in their opening three league-phase matches. Sparta have found the net five times and conceded three, while neither side has registered more shots on target than the other. The difference has been Bournemouth’s ability to make their opportunities count.

Marcus Tavernier could be one of the visitors’ most important players in Prague. He has created eight chances in Bournemouth’s opening three Europa League matches, more than anyone else from either side. His ability to find teammates in dangerous positions gives Bournemouth another route into the final third, particularly if Sparta focus on keeping Evanilson quiet.

The Brazilian has been leading the line effectively, scoring five goals in his last six games. Justin Kluivert can also contribute between the lines, while Adli’s return has added another dimension to the forward line. The Moroccan has scored three times in four appearances since coming back, giving Rose another player capable of making a difference in the final third.

However, Sparta have a way of making life uncomfortable for their opponents. They have completed 51 take-ons in their first three Europa League matches, compared with Bournemouth’s 18. The hosts have also won 22 corners, six more than the Cherries. Those numbers suggest they are capable of carrying the ball past defenders and putting pressure on the opposition, rather than simply sitting back and waiting for Bournemouth to attack.

That is where Tyler Adams and Lewis Cook could become important. Their work in midfield will be crucial in preventing Sparta from turning possession into dangerous attacking situations. If the hosts are allowed to run at Bournemouth’s defenders regularly, the visitors could find themselves under more pressure than their recent clean-sheet record suggests.

Rose may also have to make a few changes. With another Premier League fixture approaching, the Bournemouth manager has reason to protect some of his regular starters. He has already shown a willingness to rotate in European and domestic cup matches, giving opportunities to players such as Michele Di Gregorio and Ben Gannon-Doak. The challenge will be maintaining the same level of control without disrupting a side that has found a winning formula.

Sparta’s home record deserves respect, too. They have won six of their nine home matches this season and conceded only 10 goals at the epet ARENA. They are not an easy side to beat on their own ground, even if their European performances have been less convincing.

The possible absence of Mercado could make the hosts’ task harder. He has scored seven goals in all competitions and has been one of Sparta’s most dangerous attacking players. His ability to take on defenders and create something out of difficult situations will be missed if he is unavailable.

Jonatan Braut Brunes is likely to carry much of the attacking responsibility. He has scored five league goals, including four in the 5-1 victory over Slovacko, but is yet to find the net in the Europa League. Bournemouth will need to keep him away from dangerous positions rather than allow Sparta to build attacks around their striker.

If the visitors can control the midfield and prevent the hosts from turning the match into a series of direct attacks, their superior recent form should begin to show. Sparta have enough individual quality to cause problems, but Bournemouth have looked far more convincing at both ends of the pitch.

Prediction

Sparta Prague have enough quality and a strong enough home record to make this a competitive fixture, but Bournemouth arrive as the side in considerably better form. Their six-match winning streak includes convincing victories over Aston Villa, Manchester United and AC Milan, and their European record of eight goals scored and just one conceded makes them difficult to overlook.

The possibility of rotation is worth considering, especially with another league fixture approaching. Rose may not field the same starting XI that has delivered such impressive results in recent weeks. Even so, Bournemouth have shown that they have options across the squad, and players given an opportunity in Europe will be keen to make the most of it.

Sparta’s ability to take on defenders and win corners could give them opportunities, particularly in front of their home supporters. But the possible absence of Mercado would take away one of their most productive attacking outlets. Brunes has found the net regularly in the league, although his lack of a Europa League goal is another concern for the hosts.

Bournemouth’s defensive organisation should also make a difference. Conceding just once in three European matches is no accident, and Adams’ presence in midfield gives the visitors a reliable option when they need to break up opposition attacks. If Tavernier and Kluivert can find space around Sparta’s midfield, Evanilson should get opportunities to continue his scoring run.

The Cherries should have enough quality to find a way through, even if the home side make them work for it. A seventh consecutive victory looks achievable for Rose’s team.
