Even Sky Sports cannot help but meme about Thomas Partey’s wild shots

Arsenal blew Southampton away after displaying an imposing performance on Saturday that saw them score thrice at the Emirates.

Goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel helped secure Mikel Arteta’s side a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Saints.

The Gunners remained dominant throughout the game, despite Arteta fielding an unchanged team from the 2-1 loss against Everton.

In what was an opportunity to redeem his past performances, Thomas Partey was handed another start by Arteta.

And though the Ghanaian international displayed an improved performance, he looked far from his best on the night, producing one moment of howler that summed up his mediocre performance, one which even Sky Sports couldn’t help but meme about.

Following a scrummage inside Southampton’s box, a poor clearance from Tino Livramento found Partey, who stood some 30 yards from the goal.

The midfielder, perhaps feeling emboldened by the thumping scoreline, struck a wayward shot heading miles north of the bar. In fact, the ball’s trajectory was so off the target it prompted Sky Sports’ live ticker to read the following: “Partey lines up a shot. It flies over the bar. Water is wet, grass is green etc.”

The sly comment was not lost on anyone, especially the online community, who took to social media and shared screenshots of the ticker.

The expression was a cheeky reference to Partey’s exploits in front of the goal, or the lack thereof, having found the back of the net only once in 46 appearances for the Gunners so far.
