Wembley recently played host to a massive fixture, as the USWNT came up against the England Women.
The game, which saw the World Champions lock horns with the Euro holders, attracted a crowd of 76,000+ to Wembley.
The figure reflects the growing popularity of women’s football, and for good reason too, as the game was an absolute cracker.
Friendly only in name, the action on the pitch was rather feisty.
Lauren Hemp gave the Lionesses an advantage just 10 minutes in before Sophia Smith levelled things around the half-hour mark.
England were then handed a penalty for a foul on Lucy Bronze, which was swiftly converted by Georgia Stanaway.
After the break, proceedings proved to be just as frantic as chances fell for either side and in the 81st minute the visitors thought they had a spot kick.
However, after further consultation with VAR, the ref overturned her decision, causing plenty of frustration for the USA.
The hosts held on and eventually claimed an important victory, one that had eluded them since 2017.
Aside from 76,000 fans, the crowd had some A-list names in attendance.
Particularly, Wembley happened to host an unlikely crossover between Arsenal star Bukayo Saka and Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman who is famous for her roles in the Star Wars and Marvel franchises.
The duo posed for a picture together, which was then posted on Instagram by Saka, with the caption ‘Pleasure to meet you!’.
Portman, an avid football fan, is known to own her own football club, Angel City FC which competes in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Fellow actresses Eva Longoria, Jessica Chastain, and Jennifer Garner also own stakes in Angel City FC.
Nevertheless, the actress would’ve been left disappointed with the result in the end, whereas Saka would’ve undoubtedly been overjoyed.
