Alisson Becker produced an incredible performance to inspire Liverpool’s 1-0 win over PSG in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash.
With the Reds being pushed back by the proactive opposition players, Alisson ensured they went to Anfield with a positive result.
The Brazilian goalkeeper made a whopping NINE saves in the game!
He actually recorded the most number of saves by a Liverpool goalkeeper in Champions League history.
The 32-year-old also picked up his 22nd clean sheet in the competition. Alisson was buoyant with his efforts and admitted that ‘it was probably the performance of my lifetime’.
Alisson has definitely strengthened his hold on the Liverpool goalkeeper role.
With Giorgi Mamardashvili reportedly looking to displace him off the position, the Brazilian has earned the fans’ faith with this brilliant performance.
In fact, many Liverpool supporters are now calling for Alisson to get a new contract extension because of his sheer importance.
The 32-year-old had signed a five-year contract with the Reds in 2021. This expires in 2026, but there is an option to extend it until 2027.
That means Alisson will be 35 by the time his current contract runs out (at the end of June, 2027).
He indicated in an interview in 2024 that he actually rejected advances from Saudi Arabia clubs to stay at Liverpool, stating: “I want to honour my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one. I am really happy here. My family is happy. While I still have my contract here, I will be focused here. If it is in the interest of the club to negotiate [to sell] me, then it will be a different conversation.”
Hence, Alisson indicated that he’d only consider leaving Liverpool if they actively push him out.
The Reds have not been reported to be discussing a new contract for the Brazilian goalkeeper for now, but the pressure from fans can change all that.
Liverpool roped in Mamardashvili with an eye for him to be Alisson’s successor.
But with the 32-year-old still going strong, having 12 clean sheets in 26 games in the 2024/25 season so far, it looks near-impossible to remove him from the goalkeeper role in the foreseeable future.
