Scott McTominay’s career trajectory has been on an upward curve ever since he joined Napoli. From his timid times in the Premier League to winning the Scudetto and the Serie A Player of the Year, the Scottish international has come a long way in his journey. But now that journey seems to be approaching a full-circle moment for McTominay.
After a decent 25-26 season where he scored 14 goals and 4 assists across all competitions, McTominay’s time with the Italian club has entered a shaky phase. Initially, the Scottish player had signed a 4-year deal with Napoli that runs till the 2028 season. This suggests that McTominay still has a couple of seasons under his sleeves in Napoli, but the agreements to extend it hasn’t been progressive at all.
As per a report from TalkSport, McTominay is looking to grab a even more lucrative offer from the Italian club. However, the club hasn’t been too keen on meeting the player’s demands, leading to a stalemate between the two parties and reports of McTominay’s potential exit during the summer transfer window.
In this negotiations fiasco, Manchester United has emerged on to become a potential candidate to bring back McTominay to Old Trafford for a homecoming. According to a report from journalist Ekrem Konur, United has expressed their interest in the Scottish midfielder alongwith clubs like Newcastle and Aston Villa. Notably, Italian journalist Giovanni Scotti has confirmed it as well.
“He hasn’t renewed with Napoli and wants to think things through,” Scotti said as per TalkSport. “Manchester United and Aston Villa have shown some interest, but McTominay intends to wait.”
Meanwhile, a report from TeamTalk also remarks that McTominay’s agent has tipped off talks with the Red Devils for a potential return. Scott McTominay personally is also quite invested in this move, citing a nostalgic return to his boyhood club, as per Sky Sport. However, European giants like Real Madrid has also reportedly enquired of Scott McTominay’s current situation with Napoli.
But if the reports are rumored to be true, McTominay’s plausible move to Manchester United can’t be overlooked. A proper box-to-box midfielder, McTominay can bring elite veteran experience to the table for Michael Carrick. While United already have campaigners like Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans, McTominay can add depth to a team that has won just 1 in 5 games this season.
A player of McTominay’s stature who is coming off a successful stint in Italy would thus be a silver lining for Carrick and United either in the winter transfer window or after this season. Meanwhile, for McTominay, this would be a perfect opportunity to continue where he left off in his last full season at England when he scored 10 goals in the season.
