Harry Maguire arrived at Manchester United from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 for a transfer fee in the region of £80M.
The 33-year-old has entered the final year of his contract, but as his deal includes an optional one-year extension, the club could extend his stay.
Since his arrival at the Theatre of Dreams, Maguire has seen several ups and downs in his performance and his status at the club.
From 2021 to 2023, he was heavily criticised for his defensive errors, poor form, inability to control the backline, and for not justifying the price Manchester United paid to sign him from Leicester City.
At one point, Maguire was named the captain of Manchester United, but due to underwhelming displays over an extended period of time, his captaincy was stripped and handed to Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes.
However, Maguire was able to get back in form and into the starting eleven as well, and for the past two seasons, he has been performing at a decent level.
He has also helped the Red Devils win crucial matches during the course of the past two seasons with several last-minute goals.
But given his age and Manchester United’s desire to attain major silverware, the club could replace Maguire and look ahead to life after his departure.
According to Tribal Football, Manchester United are looking at a defensive overhaul and have a few names on their wishlist as a replacement for Maguire.
Nottingham Forest defender Murillo has been a target for the club in the past few transfer windows, and the club have kept monitoring his progress at the City Ground.
Last season, the Tricky Trees were in danger of getting relegated to the Championship, but in the end managed to stay in the Premier League.
In the event Nottingham Forest were relegated, it was believed that Murillo could have left the City Ground for a cut-price fee between £60-70M.
But as the club avoided relegation and Murillo is integral to the team, Manchester United may need to table an offer that exceeds the £80M they paid to sign Maguire.
Murillo arrived at Nottingham Forest from Brazilian outfit Corinthians in the summer of 2023, and he is tied to the club until 2030 under his current contract.
The Red Devils could also revisit their interest in English defender Jarred Branthwaite, who currently plays for fellow Premier League side Everton.
It is believed that Manchester United have been keeping tabs on his development at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and he could be an option for the club during the summer transfer window.
Maguire is a Premier League-proven defender, but Manchester United, under the ownership of INEOS, are looking to get the club back to its glory days, and several personnel changes are expected to happen.
The England international is closing in on 300 appearances for the club, and even as a defender, he has scored 17 goals and provided 11 assists, which showcases his ability on both ends of the pitch.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will replace Harry Maguire next season, or the 33-year-old defender will stay put at Old Trafford.
