Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold may have played their final Champions League games for Liverpool. There have been no updates on contract extensions for the three, with club captain Virgil expected to leave once the transfer window opens.
Liverpool’s Champions League campaign ended in heartbreak as they lost to PSG on penalties in the Round of 16. However, the disappointment didn’t end there, the captain’s post-match comments added further uncertainty about his future. When asked about his future at Anfield, he admitted, “I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely. I have no idea.”
This fueled the speculation of him leaving even more after the defender was spotted speaking with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos outside the Anfield dressing room following the defeat. The nature of the conversation is up for debate as during the previous leg, Virgil was seen having a heated exchange with Campos during the first leg at Parc des Princes.
Many fans are blaming Liverpool’s owners, FSG, for leaving key players in the dark regarding their futures. Mohamed Salah has already been linked to Saudi Arabia which is closer to the Egypatian’s home, and he also speaks Arabic. While Trent has been a long key target of Real Madrid, and the right-back is expected to leave for Spain this summer.
For now, the players’ focus remains on their remaining fixtures, with the hopes of securing the Premier League trophy, a potential fairytale ending to their time at Anfield.
