Liverpool Star Diogo Jota Dies in a Car Crash 5 Days After Getting Married

Diogo Jota, Liverpool

The football world was struck with profound grief as news broke of the tragic death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota in a car accident near Zamora, Spain.

The 28-year-old, who had just married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso five days prior, was killed in a collision on the A-52 motorway, near Palacios de Sanabria, at kilometer 65.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Marca and other sources, the accident occurred just after midnight, with Jota and his 26-year-old brother André Silva, a footballer for Penafiel, both pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle they were in reportedly caught fire, and despite the rapid response from the Medical Emergency Unit and local firefighters, both young men could not be saved.

Jota, born in Porto in 1996, was a beloved figure in football, known for his tenacity, goal-scoring prowess, and versatility.

Rising through the ranks of Gondomar’s youth system, he caught the eye of Atlético Madrid in 2016 before a loan to Porto and a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017.

His £45 million transfer to Liverpool in 2020 proved a masterstroke, with Jota scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances, including nine in the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Despite recurring injuries, his impact under managers Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot was undeniable, with standout moments like his decisive goal in a 1-0 Merseyside derby win against Everton.

The tragedy is compounded by its timing.

Just five days earlier, Jota had celebrated his wedding to Rute Cardoso, his partner since 2012, in a heartfelt ceremony in Porto.

The couple, who shared three children, including a second child announced just weeks ago, were described as inseparable. Jota’s Instagram post from the wedding, captioned with joy, had drawn warm congratulations from fans.

Now, Rute and their young family face an unimaginable loss, alongside Jota’s parents and extended relatives.

Tributes have flooded in from teammates, fans, and clubs worldwide, with Marca and Reuters reporting the football community’s shock. As investigations into the crash continue, Jota’s legacy as a dynamic, passionate player endures, forever etched in the hearts of those he inspired.
