Get To Know Record Newcastle Signing Nick Woltemade: Salary, FC 26 Ratings, Height, & More

Newcastle United, Nick Woltemade

Newcastle United have signed striker Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart in a club-record deal. The reported fee is around £69 million, surpassing the amount they paid for Alexander Isak.

Woltemade a 23-year-old German international, has been described as an unconventional forward. Despite his 6ft 6in height, he is known for his technical ability, dribbling skills, and creativity, often roaming into wider and deeper areas of the pitch with him being nicknamed ‘Woltemessi’ in Germany. He had a strong last season with Stuttgart, scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances.

Nick Woltemade was born on 14 February 2002 in the city of Bremen. His father Tim Woltemade was actually a professional footballer who played in the 5th tier of German Football, he played for TSV Melchiorshausen for 10 years before moving to Woltmerhausen and then retiring from the beautiful game.

It was here at Woltmerhausen in 2009 that the German would showcase his talent. He also had a knack for the game of Handball at the age of 7.

Youth Football

After Woltmerhausen he would move to the Green-Whites, Werder Bremen. He would join their youth academy and would grow and develop there and would then be moved in 2017 to their U17 side.

In 2019 Woltemade would move to their U19 side and also make his Bundesliga debut starting a match against Augsburg, in doing so he would become the youngest debutant for Werder Bremen at the age of 17.

His strong performance at Werder Bremen helped him gain recognition internationally. After playing for Germany’s U16 team, the forward went on to feature in the UEFA European U17 Championships.

In 2022, the German would move on loan to third tier side SV Elversberg for more match time and better development. His superb form saw him find the back of the net 10 times, a key contribution that propelled the club to promotion to Bundesliga 2. His brilliant season was capped off with the honor of being named the leagues Player of the Season.

After this loan spell he would head back to Bremen, however he would struggle for game time being limited to only 12 starts and 2 goals for them. Here is where his career would catapult, in the summer of 2024 he would join Stuttgart on a free transfer. Stuttgart had came off a crazy high under coach Sebastian Hoeneß. Finishing second in the Bundesliga ahead of Bayern Munich. This was their best league finish since the 2006-2007 season, and it secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League for the 2024-2025 season. Their hitman Serhou Guirassy would be sold to Dortmund, allowing the young German to make his mark.

Nick Woltemade’s 2024 season was a breakout one with VfB Stuttgart. He was a key figure in the team’s successful campaign, scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions. This included a goal in the DFB-Pokal final, which Stuttgart won, making him a major contributor to their first major trophy since 2007. His ability to play as a striker and as a number 10 despite his height make him a very unique player. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß praised the German forward saying “Nick is a striker who also likes to drop back. He’s showing more and more the qualities of a centre forward as time goes on.”

There were reports during the U21 Euros that Nick Woltemade had agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich. The German Giants were going to lose Thomas Muller after the Club World Cup. Woltemade’s ability to play as a number 10 and give Kane some rotation as a striker made it a perfect match.

Bayern would see 3 bids rejected and would deem the transfers financially impossible and move on to other targets. Over on Tyneside it was becoming clear that Alexander Isak would not play for Newcastle again, with him wanting a move to Liverpool. Newcastle could not sign Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, with the deadline approaching they had to make a big move. They would submit a bid of £69 million for Woltemade which was accepted by Stuttgart.

Newcastle Move

Coach Eddie Howe after their 0-0 draw to Leeds would comment saying “I like his different dimensions to his game,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Of course he’s a big presence, he’s a big man but he has really good technical skills and really good creative ideas around the box. If he was playing today he would’ve helped us in that respect, seeing what other players can’t. ”

“I’m really happy to be at this amazing club. From the first contact, I felt like the club really wanted me and had big plans for me,” Woltemade said in his first Newcastle interview.

According to Plettigoal the German will earn a reported £135k per week on a 6 year contract. This will make him the fourth highest earner at the club after Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon.

Many fans were surprised that Nick Woltemade speaks fluent English after a clip emerged of him speaking to Archie Rhind-Tutt after the DFB Pokal triumph. But as is the case almost all German footballers are fluent in English. This helps them gel much easier with their foreign counter parts at the club.

Height and Physicality

One of Nick’s most dominating attributes is his height and physicality. He is 6 foot 6 inches tall and is a massive aerial threat. Despite his size, he is not a typical target man. He is known for his technical ability and creativity, often dropping deep or moving into wider areas, which is a rare combination for a player of his stature. Newcastle fans could not believe when they saw he was as tall as ‘Big Dan Burn’

FC 26 Rating

Nick is rated at 79 currently on the game, his dribbling stats look great for a striker at 79. However his 67 pace and 65 passing make his card very unusable due to the game awarding pacey forwards. He’s an excellent choice for Evolutions, especially for upgrades that boost his pace. Newcastle fans will be keen to transform him into a top-tier player for their Ultimate Team.
