Arsenal, Ben White, Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal have been begging for the signing of a striker after the Gunners have fallen short of winning a title in multiple seasons most notably finishing second in the Premier League title race 3 times in a row.

They have finally managed to achieve that as they have completed the high profile transfer of Swedish international Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP. The deal marks a significant statement of intent from the north London club and for Mikel Arteta who has to deliver them a major trophy this year.

Fans are buzzing with excitement hoping he can emulate his Sporting heroics at North London and deliver them the elusive silverware that they have been craving for.

But what many don’t realize is that this isn’t just a new beginning it’s a reunion.

Hidden behind the headlines and the transfer is a secret history that connects Gyökeres to one of Arsenal’s most important players.

Gyökeres is about to reunite with his friend and former teammate, Ben White. The two have a history that dates back to their days in the youth academy at Brighton & Hove Albion.

They trained together extensively, with both players on the fringes of the first team before taking very different career paths to ultimately reunite.

Ben would talk about the Swede in an interview with Arsenal’s Media team – “It was always me and him going up from the youth team to go and train with the first team all the time, so we spent a lot of time together. We never really broke into the first team consistently there, but we were always on the edges of it when we were young.”

Ben White was a product of the Southampton academy and joined Brighton at the age of 16. Viktor Gyökeres, hailing from Sweden, was brought into Brighton’s U21 squad in 2018.

The two quickly formed a bond as they were frequently selected to train with the senior squad.

White has spoken about their time together, highlighting Gyökeres’s talent and unwavering dedication.

Ben would comment saying “Yeah, I know Viktor really well. We played together at Brighton for a long time, maybe three or four years, and I could tell even then that he was always destined for greatness. From the moment he came to Brighton, he was brought into the under-21s group and you could see he had something special about him at that age.”

After leaving Brighton, Ben White had a series of successful loan spells. He impressed at Newport County in League Two, then moved to Peterborough United in League One.

His career defining loan at Leeds United under manager Marcelo Bielsa saw him become a key player in their Championship title winning season and earn the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

His strong performances at Leeds and a successful season with Brighton in the Premier League led to a high-profile transfer to Arsenal in 2021.

After his time at Brighton, Viktor Gyökeres’s journey took him on loan to St. Pauli in Germany and then to Swansea City.

He truly hit his stride at Coventry City, where his prolific goalscoring earned him a move to Sporting CP in 2023.

There, he was incredibly successful, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances and helping the team to consecutive Primeira Liga titles.

His most notable performance coming against Manchester City in the UCL where he scored a hattrick. This form led to his transfer to Arsenal in 2025, reuniting him with his former teammate.

The two players have now reunited as senior professionals at Arsenal. White has expressed his admiration for Gyökeres’s journey, describing him as a “monster” and a constant threat to defenders.

The story of their parallel careers from training together as hopeful youngsters to becoming key players for the Gunners in their bid to become Champions, highlights their individual determination and the unexpected turns of a professional football career.
