FC 26 Potential Explained — and the Wonderkids Who Benefit Most

FC 26

In EA Sports FC 26 Career Mode, player potential determines how much a player can grow and develop over time. This system is crucial for building a successful long term squad, especially when managing younger players who can transform into world class talent. We all play Career mode for the same reason, take a small club from the second or third division to European Glory and finding these hidden gems allows us to sign players for cheap and ensuring they have a higher rating when we need them for the higher divisions.

What is Potential?

In FC 26, every player is assigned a potential rating, which dictates how high their OVR can rise. For young players, especially those under 22, this is the most crucial attribute. Some established players have a set maximum OVR that they will not typically exceed. Players in your Youth Academy and those newly scouted often have a potential range (e.g 75-94). The final potential is often determined upon signing them to the senior squad.

Now, Dynamic Potential, it’s the real game changer. A player’s potential is not static and can fluctuate from season to season based on their performance, playing time, and the team’s overall success. A high potential player who doesn’t play might see their potential drop, while a lower potential player who consistently performs could see theirs increase, potentially exceeding their initial cap.

Dynamic Potential is influenced by several factors such as: Playing Time, regular first team football is critical. Players who spend time on the bench or in the reserves are more likely to have their potential reduced. Loan spells, when managed correctly, can be a great way to guarantee game time however they are not under your control so better to avoid them if you can. Excellent match ratings, scoring goals, assisting, and generally contributing to wins will positively impact a player’s potential. Conversely, poor form can have a negative effect. Winning trophies and maintaining high team morale often provides a potential boost across the entire squad, especially for younger players.

Strategies for Player Development

The Development Plan is your central tool for player growth. Don’t stick to the Balanced plan. Select a development path that focuses on the attributes most crucial for the player’s position and your tactical vision. For example, a young striker with great pace might need a plan focused on Finisher to boost their shooting stats. Development plans have a time to completion. Choose plans that align with your immediate needs but balance them with long term growth.

Hire high rated Coaches, Coaches are rated 1 to 5 stars in Attack, Midfield, Defense, and Goalkeeping. Hiring coaches with the highest star ratings in each department is vital for faster attribute growth. Each coach also has a preference for a Tactical Vision (e.g., Gegenpressing, Wing Play). Align your coaches’ visions with your overall team tactic for maximum effect, as this can reduce the time it takes for players to improve.

Hire three scouts with the highest possible Judgment (affects player quality) and Experience (affects player quantity) ratings. Send them to footballing hotbeds like Brazil, Argentina, France, and Spain for the best chance of finding an elite talent. Only promote players from the YA to the senior squad when their Current OVR is high enough to get some first team or reserve team minutes, or when they threaten to leave. Keeping them in the academy for maximum growth is generally the best strategy until they demand a promotion.

While potential can change, certain young players start with remarkably high potential, making them prime transfer targets. Don’t miss out on these gems, a list of high potential players to sign.
