Marcus Rashford’s New Barcelona Celebration Explained – What Does the ‘T’ Mean?

Marcus Rashford has had a career resurgence since joining FC Barcelona in the summer. The speedy forward had an ugly falling out with Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim but was given a lifeline by Hansi Flick.

Rashford didn’t take much time to settle, chipping in with assists from the wing, but now he seems to have found his shooting boots as well. Not just that, he may have just debuted a new celebration at Barcelona, causing some confusion for his Barcelona teammates.

Marcus Rashford’s signature celebration

The Manchester-born forward struggled at Manchester United the last couple of seasons to the point he had to endure constant criticism from local fans, YouTubers, and critics who once adored him.

Rashford didn’t help matters either, giving the middle finger to fans after losses, turning up to training late, skipping town and going on night outs just days before a Manchester derby, and turning up to training hungover from the previous night’s partying.

A loan to the Blaugrana side seems to have re-ignited his discipline and love for the game.

His flair and passion were on show this weekend as he shone during Barca’s 3-1 victory over Elche in La Liga. Rashford scored his side’s third goal, putting the game to rest, and rounding off another impressive performance for himself and his side.

After his goal, he seemed to have debuted a new celebration, which even confused his teammate.

After thundering a left-footed strike past the keeper, as he was wheeling away to the corner flag with Alejandro Balde, Rashford celebrated by making a T gesture. Balde, who was expecting Rashford to do his signature “Point to the Temple” celebration, did the usual Rashford celebration.

Rashford is not new to celebrations. At one point, his signature “Point to the Temple” celebration took the football world by storm. But what was this new celebration?

Eagle-eyed Barcelona fans quickly realized that there actually wasn’t any confusion. In fact, Rashford was doing Balde’s “T” celebration while Balde, who has become a close friend of Rashford, was doing Rashford’s celebration.

Balde’s “T” celebration, where he makes a “T” gesture with his hands, is a tribute to his parents, named Tania and Te. Since “T” represents the first initial of both his parents’ names, he uses it as a gesture to honor the role his family played in his life and career.

Rashford has been impressing on and off the pitch. Owing to how good he has been since joining Barca, he received a warm applause from home fans as he came off for Lewandowski at the 74th-minute mark.

The United loanee has scored 6 goals and bagged 7 assists in 14 appearances, helping his side remain in touching distance of Real Madrid in LaLiga, with five points separating them from the table toppers.

In comparison, Amorim has had an eventful start to the season, to say the least. While many fans are unhappy at the inconsistent form, unexpected losses, and a hard-to-watch style of play, others will show you the recent results and position on the table as a sign that Amorim is finally coming good.

Unbeaten in the last 4 games, Manchester United are just 2 points shy of 2nd placed Manchester City. This is a massive improvement compared to the 15th-place finish under Amorim last year.
