This New Chelsea Chant for Robert Sanchez Is Savage and Wholesome at the Same Time

Chelsea, Football Chants, Robert Sanchez

Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation hasn’t seen the light of day since their 2021 UEFA Champions League triumph, while conceding only 4 goals throughout the campaign as they became champions of Europe for the second time in their history.

Senegalese international Edouard Mendy was between the sticks for the Blues whose departure at the end of the 22/23 season saw the new ‘Boehly era’ go on a spending spree in the transfer market as they signed 2 new goalkeepers.

Spanish national Robert Sanchez and Serbian Djordje Petrovic were recruited by the Blues for a fee of around £25 million and £20 million, respectively. Contrary to the West Londoners’ desire, the problems in the goal continued as during the 23/24 season, Sanchez sustained two different injuries including a knee injury which saw him miss 26 games across all competitions, with the majority of them being in the Premier League.

Second-choice goalkeeper, Petrovic was called up to action in order to prevent any further misery under then manager Mauricio Pochettino. The 26 year-old became an instant fan favourite amongst the Chelsea supporters with many keen on him becoming the first-choice keeper for the Blues.

However, ahead of the 24/25 season, Pochettino was replaced by now head coach Enzo Maresca who re-instated the Spaniard as the first-choice keeper as the Serbian international was left out of the Italian head coach’s plans. Despite the head coach’s full trust in him, Sanchez saw himself become an unfortunate laughing stock for the majority of the 24/25 season due to his extensive errors leading to goals conceded by the Blues.

However, there was a silver lining as Sanchez had the joint-highest save percentage throughout the 24/25 campaign. To the Blues’ pleasure, the 28 year-old went on a redemption arc, most notably against PSG as he won the Golden Glove award in the FIFA Club World Cup, which saw the Blues become Champions of the World earlier in the summer.

In the ongoing 25/26 campaign, Sanchez has the joint-most clean sheets (7) along with fellow countryman and Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. To boost the Chelsea no.1’s confidence even further, the fans have created a hilarious chant which accentuates his journey from being untrustworthy to making the fans feel safe with his presence in goal.

The lyrics of the new chant for Sanchez goes – “There’s only one Robert Sanchez, he used to be sh*te, now he’s alright, walking in the Chelsea wonderland.”

This chant was done inside Walham Green, a famous pub near Stamford Bridge, after the Blues thrashed reigning La Liga champions Barcelona 3-0, in a mouth-watering Champions League tie earlier this week. It is the living example of the vast humour of the English football fanbase, famous for its self-depreciating humour. The chant recognises the goalkeeper’s previous blunders while highlighting the major improvement in his form which has helped Chelsea keep a foot in the race for the Premier League title.

At the time of writing, the reigning World Champions sit second-placed in the Premier League table, six points behind league leaders and title favourites Arsenal, who the Blues host over the weekend in what could be a thrilling tide-turner in the title race.
