Amadou Onana Signs Image Rights Deal with Drake’s Former Label

Amadou Onana, Aston Villa, Premier League

Amadou Onana has been enjoying his time in London with Aston Villa. The Villans are in 3rd place in the points table, eyeing an UCL spot. Onana has been a relief in the midfield for Villa, playing a crucial part in their recent 11-game winning streak. He even created a trend of pocketing three points with a cheeky celebration. On the course, he has now given a new topic of concern for the Twitter casuals.

Amadou Onana has given his image rights to Young Money entertainment, and has received warning from the football community reminding about all the controversies associated with the American agency.

Who are Young Money and why are they so controversial?

Young Money entertainment is a record label company found by Lil Wayne in 2005, along with the Cash Money records label of fellow rapper Birdman.

Although they have shown commercial success, the noise inside their label and the ownership deals have wounded their reputation.

Lil Wayne had too much to deal with as the founder.

In 2018, a long prevailing dispute over ownership with Cash Money founder Birdman, found an ending, as Lil Wayne acquired 100% ownership of the label.

Birdman and Lil Wayne

This dispute had a lot of complications starting from the unpaid royalties of Drake and Nicki Minaj, who were brought into the label by Lil Wayne. The issues escalated into mismanagement and not sharing the profit, leading to the legal dispute of ownership.

This formed the core issue for multiple other artists to move out of the label. Nicki Minaj and Drake themselves, ended their ties with the Young Money label, going directly into Republic records, who partially own the Young Money stakes. Jae Millz had Confrontations with Lil Wayne over Payment delays and had moved out of the label.

The 2014 Tyga’s beef with the entertainment agency is a popular black-mark for the label. Tyga publicly claimed that Young Money were holding him hostage and were not releasing his songs and albums, hindering his career in the midst of the internal politics. This led to the individual release of his album “The Gold Album”, no longer part of the Young Money. He still had legal lawsuits over unpaid royalties that continued till 2018.

With such reputational damage to their name, it is very difficult for the agency to guarantee stable, smooth deals with artists. Safe to say they have their guardian angel in Onana’s disguise, as to everyone’s surprise, they secured the deal with one of Premier League’s famous names. He might be on the verge of something historic to come in the Soccer market, especially for black footballers

Onana’ entrustment had fans worry over potential mismanagement of his deal, with the Young Money’s reputation with artists at falter.

However it is important to note, that Amadou Onana will not be under direct management of Lil Wayne, as the Young Money expanded their global branding with the establishment of Young Money APAA soccer division, a seperate global soccer athletes management company. This is managed by Dennis Chin, a former professional footballer, who brought his own Footballing agency “CHYN” under the Young Money Umbrella.

With this deal, Onana became the first high profile footballer from the european region to be a part of the agency roster. His future endorsement successes can help improve Young Money’s global image as well as pave the way for fellow footballers in Europe into the agency.
