Shadow King

Outrage Over Bidding on AS Roma Women Shorts Explained

AS Roma, Women's Football

AS Roma Women are crushing it in Serie A Femminile this season. They’re sitting at the top of the 25/26 points table with 32 points from 13 games.

They’ve scored 26 goals and let in only 12, ahead of Inter Milan (27 points) and Juventus (26 points).

Captain Manuela Giugliano, 28, runs the show from midfield. She’s one of the league’s top scorers and assist makers. Up front, Valentina Giacinti brings years of experience and knows how to find the net. Norwegian winger Emilie Haavi tears down the wings with speed. And 22-year-old Swiss player Alayah Pilgrim adds goals and energy.

Roma just beat AC Milan 1-0 with Valentina Bergamaschi scoring the winner. A week before, they fought back to draw 3-3 at Parma.

Under coach Luca Rossettini, they’re chasing another title after winning back-to-back championships in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

But off the pitch, something gross is happening.

On auction site MatchWornShirts, match-worn items from Roma’s players are selling.

Signed shirts from Giugliano, Giacinti, Haavi, and Pilgrim get decent bids. But their match-worn shorts?

They’re selling for way more, often double or triple the price, with crazy bidding wars.

The question is simple: why would shorts sell for so much more than shirts?

The answer has nothing to do with football.

Shirts show a player’s hard work on the field. Shorts cover more private areas.

The higher prices for shorts aren’t about celebrating these athletes, it’s about something creepy and sexual.

Here’s the thing: this doesn’t happen with men’s football. Male players’ shorts don’t outsell their shirts like this.

Matchworn shorts of Alayah Pilgrim went for €565

Roma Women deserve better. They’re winning games, leading the league, and playing great football. They shouldn’t have their achievements buried under stories about creepy guys buying their shorts.

Women’s football still has problems beyond the game. These players deserve respect for what they do on the pitch. Nothing less.

Safe to say, fans are totally disgusted.

However, a closer look at MatchWornKits reveals a more complex picture.

When filtering all AS Roma Women merchandise on the site, the most expensive items overall are actually shirts. This suggests that individual player popularity appears to play a significant role.

Rising stars like 22-year-old Alayah Pilgrim, who’s quickly becoming a fan favorite, might see her match-worn shorts outbid even some teammates’ shirts.

But even if some auctions are driven by legitimate fandom, the pattern of shorts commanding premium prices in certain cases still raises uncomfortable questions.
