When Tottenham Hotspur won the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League on 21 May 2025 and finally ended their highly infamous trophy drought, everyone thought that this triumph would mark the beginning of a new, fruitful era for the North London club.
However, this season has been far from smooth sailing for the Lilywhites. They currently sit 16th in the league table with a mere 29 points.
And on 5 March 2026, their suffering only worsened when they lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace on the 29th matchday of the 2026-26 Premier League season.
And if this on-field humiliation wasn’t enough, the brutal Crystal Palace chant, “Say hello to Millwall,” echoed during the 39th minute from the Palace end. Therefore, it’s safe to say that it wasn’t a good day at the office for one club, while it was a season highlight for the other.

But why was Millwall F.C. referenced in these chants? Here’s the reason…
The reasoning behind this ‘Millwall chant’ is a brutal premonition of Tottenham’s descent to the 2nd tier of English football, the EFL Championship, where Millwall currently plays.
This chant hints that the two sides’ next meeting won’t be in the Premier League, but against Millwall in the Championship.
And why ‘Millwall F.C” in particular? This singling out was due to Crystal Palace’s intense South London derby rivalry with Millwall. Therefore, this chant was a double insult of not only foreshadowing relegation and potential humiliation by their rivals, as well.
Additionally, it’s because of the ‘London derby’ that Spurs fans would be looking forward to next season, which won’t be against their North London rivals, Arsenal. But against the South East London club, Millwall F.C, who are in their 48th season in the Championship.
Other chants by the Palace fans that induced Spurs mockery included, “Sit down, if you’re going down….”.
Tottenham fans were visibly devastated and angered by the chants as they watched their side collapse. A BBC Radio 1 presenter and a popular COYS fan, Jess Iszatt, was visibly shocked and at a loss for words, hearing such words.

The match began with Spurs getting 2 yellow cards within the first 25 minutes, followed by their highest moment of the match, when Dominic Solanke smashed a left-footed strike in the 34th minute. But this happiness was short-lived. The club’s star defender, Micky van de Ven, got red-carded in the 38th minute and will likely serve a multiple-match suspension.
After this, it was all Crystal Palace, who took advantage and dominated the play from thereon, scoring three in the process, with Ismaïla Sarr having two to his name, and Jørgen Strand Larsen claiming the third.
Tottenham Hotspur, who currently sit 16th in the table, have suffered 14 defeats, seen 8 draws, won a mere 7 matches, with a -7 GD this season. They are also only 1 point above the relegation zone.
As for Millwall, they sit in 4th place in the Championship with an 18-8-9 record, positioning them in contention for promotion, which would actually nullify the aforementioned chant .
Lastly, coming up for the north London-based club is the 1st leg of the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, where they’ll face Atlético Madrid on 10 March 2026.
