After a new episode on The Overlap, which features famous football pundits such as Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ian Wright, had a guest appearance with Rooney where they discussed one of the takes from a fan.
The Overlap opinions on Neymar. Just admit you never watched him ffs🤦♂️ pic.twitter.com/FMSXpd1TYO

“No Premier League player in history is better than prime Neymar”
The take was immediately refuted by all on the podcast. This eventually led to a cascading collection of comments which, has landed The Overlap into hot trouble on social media.
Many are frustrated with Roy Keane, who immediately put Wayne Rooney over Neymar. Rooney himself is also in the crossfire, as he said:
“I never saw Neymar as a top-top player with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. He[Neymar] was overshadowed by Messi.”
– Wayne Rooney
Keane also mentioned other possible Premier League legends better than Neymar, such as Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo. Jill Scott tried to mix in Sane and Salah, which some pointed out as farming user engagement. Ian Wright quickly refuted:
“Salah is not better than Neymar, I’ll have to fight Wayne[Rooney] for that.”
– Ian Wright
Some pointed out that the Overlap was trying too hard to say outlandish statements to stay relevant.
Rooney probably thinks Foden is better than Neymar too
— 🇨🇦 (@ranzafc) March 19, 2026
Why are Manchester United legends like this? They say anything to stay relevant including disrespect their own former teammates, football legends, managers, other clubs etc. What is wrong with them?
— WelBeast (@WelBeast) March 19, 2026
Some also defended Rooney’s statements, with the same sort of bias The Overlap had in terms of Premiership football.
A lot of people did not watch Rooney and it’s showing
— 🎬N (@Nino12x) March 19, 2026
A gritty, explosive no 9/10 with a clutch gene never seen before. His longevity spanned over 15 years. was truly a unicorn
Can understand why a lot of fans love Neymar. His flair and dribbling ability was unreal
But Rooney… https://t.co/6tjyewSUVL
This similar bias carries over to the fans as well. As United fans defend their legend remarking his contribution to English Football outweighs Neymar’s for Brazil.
But what exactly is behind this debate?
The Stats Comparison
📊 Neymar vs Wayne Rooney – career stats:
— Sholy Nation Sports (@Sholynationsp) March 20, 2026
🇧🇷 Neymar:
👕 752 games

🏴 Wayne Rooney:

In terms of career numbers, Neymar leads the charts in almost every category. The only discrepancy is that Neymar played in supposedly “easier” leagues, such as the Brazilian Serie A, La Liga and Ligue 1. Rooney played Premier League football for 15 years.
Neymar had 5 years at Barcelona. That’s it, five. The rest of the time he’s swanning about on holiday in Paris and Saudi Arabia & you’re trying to tell me that’s more impressive than Rooney who ended his career as both Manchester United and England’s top goalscorer. Incomparable.

In terms of International football, both players faced numerous setbacks. Despite being all-time goal scorers, Neymar and Rooney both never won major trophies for their nation.
The infamous “Hatercentral” account also discussed their International contributions in the World Cup stage.

Rooney was part of the England team which failed to qualify for the 2008 Euros. He also had the infamous red card in the 2006 quarter final, England vs Portugal. Despite being England’s all time leading goal scorer with 53, he didn’t have a successful tenure with England.
Neymar’s main success came through the 2014 World Cup, where Brazil hosted the tournament. Neymar was injured in the quarter finals before the infamous Germany Semi-final landslide defeat. However, Neymar did win gold for Brazil in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Neymar can still add to his international legacy provided Ancelotti selects him in the World Cup squad for 2026, to learn more on that story:

The Accolades
Both Neymar and Rooney have won 1 Champions League each. Neymar has won 8 domestic titles across La Liga and Ligue 1, compared to Rooney’s 5 Premier League titles. Neymar also won the Club World Cup in 2015 with Barcelona.
Neymar also ranked higher than Rooney in Ballon d’or rankings. Neymar’s highest was 3rd while Rooney’s was 5th.
The Brazilian also won the 2011 Puskas Goal award, where Rooney’s iconic bicycle kick in the Manchester derby was also nominated that year, as Neymar fans drilled that point firmly.
Neymar won the Puskas on Rooney’s head the same year 😂

The legacy
As for legacy, Neymar is considered one of the last flamboyant players for Brazil who had amazing flair and dribbling that hypnotized the world when he had the ball at his feet. It is no secret Neymar was the better dribbler of the two. Not even “UTDTrey” can deny that.
I love Neymar but please end this Neymar VS Rooney debate immediately
— (fan) Trey (@UTDTrey) March 19, 2026
Apart from Dribbling, Neymar had nothing on Wayne Mark Rooney. Learn respect.
Neymar also stood highly even against Brazilian legends in statistics. Although harsh to put Aguero under fire such as in this tweet, it does showcase Neymar in a higher level than Rooney.
Neymar was in conversations with Ronaldinho
— KALYJAY (@gyaigyimii) March 19, 2026
Rooney was in convos with Aguero
Rooney also burst onto the scene as an amazing all-round footballer for Everton. That screamer started a unique goal catalog for Wayne, who has had a “Brexit” style of scoring goals which often blow the roof off of Old Trafford.
this is further backed by fans, some said Rooney was a more intense player on the pitch than Neymar.
Show me a clip of Neymar doing this then we’ll talk about who’s better😮💨
— The 44 ⚽️ (@The_Forty_Four) March 20, 2026
Skin head Rooney was TOP pic.twitter.com/gltWY1mzAB
In terms of longevity, both left Europe at a similar age, possibly because they started top flight football at such young ages, it took a huge toll on their bodies right when they turned 30.
Overall, in each metric, it is hard to say Rooney has any leg up on Neymar. Although there is one thing Rooney seems to be better at:
Agenda aside, Wayne Rooney is way better than Neymar at speaking English.
— Elvis Tunde (@Tunnykvng) March 19, 2026
Rooney also caught himself in another controversy in the same episode of The Overlap, in which he stated:
“There won’t be a worse World Cup than 2010 South Africa.”
Wayne Rooney stating there will be never be a worse World Cup than South Africa in 2010 when speaking about the upcoming World Cup…

This has also caused a fair bit of outrage on twitter, as many pointed out he might’ve just been bitter about England’s quick Round of 16 exit to Germany in that tournament.
The Neymar vs. Rooney debate seems pretty cut and dry, and the only defense for Rooney’s comments have mostly been from loyal Premier League fans. Neymar is still yet to retire from the beautiful game, while Rooney’s post playing career hasn’t faired well with failing managerial stints.
