Romain Molina Reveals Liverpool FC Succession Plan With Xabi Alonso Lined Up

Liverpool

French investigative journalist Romain Molina has claimed that Liverpool will have a new manager next season after a difficult 2025/26 campaign under head coach Arne Slot.

According to Molina, Liverpool’s hierarchy is increasingly convinced that Xabi Alonso is the ideal candidate to lead the club moving forward, with discussions reportedly ongoing for some time.

Liverpool sit 5th in the Premier League with 49 points from 31 games, their title hopes long gone and their FA Cup dreams ended by a 4–0 hammering from Manchester City, leaving a Champions League quarter-final against PSG as their last shot at silverware.

Molina also suggested that an internal restructuring could soon take place at Liverpool, particularly due to overlapping responsibilities between sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO of football Michael Edwards.

The backdrop to this is the collapse of Liverpool’s previously planned multi-club ownership project, which was expected to become a major pillar of the club’s long-term sporting strategy.

On the sporting side, Molina claims Liverpool have already identified key areas that require strengthening in the upcoming transfer window:

  • A new striker
  • Defensive reinforcements
  • Renewal of the wing positions

Molina also revealed that Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, explored acquiring a French club as part of a multi-club ownership structure.

The clubs reportedly approached include:

  • FC Nantes
  • AS Monaco FC
  • FC Girondins de Bordeaux
  • Toulouse FC
  • Le Mans FC

Such a structure would allow Liverpool to develop younger players across multiple teams, similar to models used by groups like City Football Group and Red Bull GmbH in football.

However, Molina claims that the project is currently stalled due to the global economic climate, though it remains under consideration.
