Ajax announced recently that they have managed to acquire the services of goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen on a year long loan from FC Barcelona.
The 34-year-old arrived in Amsterdam on the back of two injury plagued seasons with little playing time to show for it.

Ter Stegen has been at Barcelona for over a decade, winning a host of titles with the club. However, injury troubles starting in 2023/24 have relegated him to the bench ever since, with just eight appearances to boast in the following season.
The German lost his starting spot to Joan Garcia and thus headed to Girona on loan for the second half of last season. However, after two games, Ter Stegen suffered a hamstring injury which ended his season early.
Now, the 34-year-old hopes to revive his career in the Netherlands. But memes of a familiar foe have come back to haunt Ter Stegen on the internet, making reference to a long standing interpersonal national rivalry that seems to have no end.
Phoroshopped images of Neuer wearing an Ajax kit are going viral, the hilarity of the image hidden in the story the two have shared over the years. It connotes the Bayern legend taking over Ter Stegen’s sport as starter in Amsterdam, a familiar narrative for both the men over the last decade.
Ter Stegen first broke the ranks at Borussia Monchengladbach where he made his senior debut in 2011. The German took no time in cementing himself as a starter and began each of the club’s league games for the next three seasons.
Barcelona came calling as a result, for whom he racked up over 400 competitive games. He was even named La Liga player of the season during the Blaugrana’s title winning campaign in 2022/23 and made multiple Champions League year-end squads.
However, the storied club career is where Ter Stegen’s legacy ends. Despite the wealth of experience and credentials that saw him regularly feature in the world’s best goalkeeper conversation for over a decade, his national career has had little to show for it.
And there is one blatant reason behind it all. He goes by the name of Manuel Neuer.
Unfortunately for Ter Stegen, Neuer burst onto the scene a few years before him in the late 2000s and revolutionized goalkeeping. To add to his unprecedented skills, the German wall has displayed fantastic longevity, entering the third decade of his professional career.
As a result, Neuer has been Germany’s number one since the 2010 World Cup. He has racked up 128 caps for Die Mannschaft, the fifth most in their footballing history.
Pretty much throughout this period, Ter Stegen has served as his number two. His appearances were limited to the occasional friendly appearance, and starting with Euro 2016 had to contend with sitting on the bench for five straight major tournaments.
Ter Stegen finally graduated to a starting role when Neuer finally announced his international retirement in 2024. The then-Barca keeper finally started a major tournament game for Germany in the 2025 UEFA Nations League and seemed to have his eyes set on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Yet, as luck would have it, hamstring issues complicated matters for Ter Stegen. And then out of the blue, Neuer announced he had rescinded his retirement, proving to be a final nail in the coffin for his compatriot’s hopes and dreams.
All that has meant Ter Stegen has managed to don the German kit just 44 times in a 14-year national career. Albeit Neuer has now hung his boots up for good, Ter Stegen is also entering the twilight of his career.
Ajax’s latest signing now faces stiff competition from Fulham’s Bernd Leno and Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann, the latter serving as Neuer’s backup in the recent world event.
Only time will tell whether Ter Stegen still has some chapters to write with Germany. For now though, he insists he is back to full fitness and is slated to kick off his Ajax career with their Eredevisie curtain raiser against PEC Zwolle on Sunday.
