Tim Ream Says Goodbye To USMNT With Wife and Three Kids by His Side

Football WAGs, Tim Ream, USMNT

Tim Ream’s 16-year international career came to an emotional close on Tuesday night as the USMNT honoured him in his hometown of St. Louis.

Ream was honoured ahead of the friendly against Chile, with his wife and three children by his side. The ceremony gave fans a chance to celebrate a player who made 86 appearances for the national team, while also highlighting the family that has been alongside him throughout his career.

Ream met his wife, Kristen Sapienza, at Saint Louis University, where both played soccer. Their shared connection to the sport has also given Kristen an understanding of the demands that come with Ream’s career.

The couple married in January 2012 and have since experienced several major moves together, including Ream’s time in England with Bolton Wanderers and Fulham before his return to the United States.

Ream has spoken about the importance of his family in helping him maintain perspective away from football. His home life gives him an opportunity to step away from the pressure of being a professional footballer and simply spend time with his wife and children.

Ream and Kristen have three children, Aidan, Theodore and Lilia. Ream has previously spoken about how important his children are to him and how they help him switch off from football.

In a U.S. Soccer Q&A, he explained that spending time with his family allows him to return home and “be Dad and be myself” without having to think about games or matches.

That separation has been particularly important during a career that has involved constant travel, international camps and the pressure of playing at the highest level.

His children have also given him another source of motivation. Ream has described his family as an important part of his life away from football, providing the perspective that can be difficult to find when a player’s entire routine revolves around the game.

Fatherhood has also influenced Ream’s approach as a leader.

Reflecting on his time as a USMNT captain, Ream said, “Parenting has definitely influenced me being a captain, that’s for sure.”

He explained that many of his younger teammates are closer in age to his oldest child than they are to him, adding that becoming a parent has helped him understand how to lead those players.

That makes his family connection relevant to more than his life away from football. Ream believes the experience of raising children has also shaped how he communicates with and supports younger teammates.

The tribute struck a chord well beyond St. Louis. Major League Soccer’s own account led the tributes, framing it as a hometown moment fitting for a player who’d given so much to the national team.

“Our guy Tim Ream being honored in his hometown for an incredible @USMNT career. Well deserved.”

— Major League Soccer (@MLS), September 30

Fellow USMNT figures echoed the sentiment. An account posting as Captain Pulisic captured the bittersweet nature of watching a long-serving veteran step away.

“so bittersweet bc it just feels like he should always be there but tim ream what a person and player. we couldn’t have wished for anything more from you thank you”

Supporter Susan T praised his leadership specifically from the World Cup run earlier this year.

“Well done Tim. Brilliant job as captain at the World Cup. We’re going to miss you.”

— Susan T (@Suz_Todd)

Not every reaction was pure sentiment, though. One fan admitted to some regret over how Ream had been treated by supporters in the past.

“My dumbass fans were booing him the last time he played in Atlanta.”

That mix of celebration and self-reflection says something about how Ream’s career has been received over the years, not always universally embraced in the moment, but clearly appreciated in hindsight.

More Family Time After International Retirement

Ream’s international retirement now means fewer national-team camps and trips, giving him more time with Kristen and their three children.

He will continue his club career with Charlotte FC, but the end of his USMNT journey allows him to spend more time with the family that has been part of that journey from the beginning.

For Ream, the St. Louis tribute was therefore more than a celebration of 86 caps. With his wife and children beside him, it also marked the end of one chapter of a career they had experienced together.
